Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (7-5) beat the Amarillo Sox (4-8) 10-4 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.

Wichita's offense clicked on all cylinders for a second straight night, collecting 15 base hits. Eight different Wingnuts had at least one hit, while seven scored at least one run.

The Wingnuts scored three first-inning runs after there were two outs and no one on base. John Rodriguez and C.J. Ziegler singled back-to-back, setting up a line drive, RBI single to center from Derek Perren. After Abel Nieves walked to load the bases, Stephen Yoo made it 3-0 with another line drive single to center.

Amarillo manufactured a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to center from K.C. Serna, but the Wingnuts answered back with two in the bottom of the fourth. David Amberson legged out an infield single leading off, stole second base, and took third on Jared McDonald's line drive to deep center. Ryan Khoury brought in Amberson with a sacrifice fly. On the next pitch, Jake Kahaulelio homered to deep left-center to make it 5-1 in favor of Wichita.

A two-run single from Chris Valencia in the top of the fifth, and a Chris Grossman solo home run in the top of the sixth pulled the Sox within one run.

Wichita again responded, scoring two in the bottom of the sixth to open a 7-4 lead. Amberson led off the inning with a single up the middle and went to third on an infield hit by McDonald. John Holdzkom relieved Sox' starter Joe Newby and allowed McDonald to steal second base. Khoury drove in the Wingnuts' sixth run with a sacrifice fly to center field. After the Wingnuts loaded the bases with two outs, McDonald scored from third when Sox' catcher Trey Ford made an errant throw into center field on a backpick attempt at second base.

A McDonald double and a Khoury single opened the bottom of the eighth, setting up an RBI single to center from Kahaulelio that made it 8-4. Two batters later, C.J. Ziegler was intentionally walked, and the Wingnuts scored their final runs of the night when Perren hit a two-run single through the left side.

Chris Smith earned the win for the Wingnuts, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits in six and two-thirds innings. Smith walked three and struck out two.
