RailCats Fall 6-4 in Rain-Shortened Game

Gary, Ind. - The RailCats and Explorers exchanged first-inning rallies, but Palmer Karr's RBI double in the third put Sioux City ahead for good in a rain-shortened seven inning game on Tuesday night. The RailCats (7-5) will look for the series win in Wednesday night's rubber match at U. S. Steel Yard. The RailCats also recorded the 10,000th hit in franchise history on Tuesday.

The Explorers jumped out quickly in the first inning. Eliezer Mesa and Wally Backman Jr. started the inning with back-to-back singles. Sam Judah reached on an error by pitcher Will Krout to load the bases. One run scored on a double play by Peter Barrows. Bryan Pounds then hit a two-run double to dead center to give Sioux City a 3-0 edge.

The RailCats matched the Explorers with three runs in their half of the first. Adam Klein walked and Mike Massaro followed with a double. Cristian Guerrero grounded out to score Klein. Craig Maddox hit an RBI double to left center to bring home Massaro and the next batter, Steve Liddle, smacked a run-scoring single to center to tie the game.

Gary grabbed the lead in the second inning. Zac Mitchell singled to right and Chase Tucker lined a base hit to center. The ball was bobbled by center fielder Eliezer Mesa for an error that allowed Mitchell to come all the way in and score, giving the RailCats a 4-3 lead.

Sioux City took the lead back in the third inning on a Karr's two-run double in the third. They added an unearned run in the seventh on a double play.

The RailCats reached a milestone in the fourth inning, as Drew Martinez hit a single for the 10,000th hit in franchise history.

The rain shower began with two on for Sioux City and one out in the eight. After a 42 minute delay, the game was called final.

Explorers starter Preston Olson (1-1) picked up the first win of his professional career. In five innings, the right-hander allowed four runs, only three earned, on seven hits and one walk. Olson struck out two. Krout (1-1) gave up six runs, five earned on 11 hits in 7 =A8=F7.

The series finale on Wednesday will be Dollar Wednesday and fans can buy one ticket and get one for $1 at the box office. Reigning American Association Pitcher of the Week Alain Quijano (2-0, 4.70) will pitch for Gary.
