Schaefer Gets Call to Cleveland
November 25, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â Fresno Falcons goaltender Nolan Schaefer, who was assigned to the team by the San Jose Sharks at the beginning of the season, has been called up to San Jose's top developmental affiliate, the American Hockey League's Cleveland Barons. In a separate transaction, the Falcons also traded for center Jim Leger from the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies in exchange for cash considerations.
Schaefer is a fifth round draft pick of the Sharks from the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He has appeared in 10 games with the Falcons this season, compiling a record of 4-5-0 with a 3.02 goals against average and 91.0% save percentage. San Jose's number one goaltender, Evgeni Nabakov, went down with an injury, which set in motion the chain of call-ups leading to Schaefer's promotion.
Fresno has signed goaltender Will Hamele as an emergency back-up to fill Schaefer's void on the roster. Hamele is a rookie, who played part of one game with the Indianapolis Ice of the Central Hockey League earlier this season.
Falcons head coach and general manager Blaine Moore also completed his third trade of the season yesterday when he acquired Leger, a fourth-year pro, who recorded five goals and two assists in 15 games with the defending Kelly Cup Champion Boardwalk Bullies this season. The 5'10", 196 lb. native of Massachusetts had a 20-goal season with the Johnstown Chiefs (ECHL) in 2001-02 and has spent a total of 21 games in the AHL throughout his career with both the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Lowell Lock Monsters.
Tonight Fresno plays the first of a three-game set at Idaho, which continues on Wednesday and Friday before the club returns home on Sunday, Nov. 30, to face the Alaska Aces at 5 p.m. at Save Mart Center at Fresno State. The live radio broadcast of tonight's contest can be heard on KAAT 103.1 FM beginning at 5:50 p.m. with the pre-game show.
