Roanoke Express News Release
ROANOKE, VA - Tipping the scales this holiday season is good news for local wireless provider Nextel Partners, whose annual food drive collected a record 1,000 pounds of canned food for local families in need.
Roanoke residents joined Nextel Partners employees and their families as well as its customers and wireless dealers in the 'Nextel Cans For A Cause' food drive effort, helping the company exceed its goal by 100 percent.
Nextel Partners launched the third-annual program Nov. 3-26 to help families in need this holiday season and give back to the communities it serves. The company surpassed its three-week goal to collect 500 pounds of canned food in each of its markets nationwide, collecting a total of 30,000 pounds across the U.S.
Donations were collected at the Nextel Night-Roanoke Express game on November 16th.
"We'd like to extend our thanks to the community for helping us continue our success with the 'Nextel Cans For A Cause' program," said Steve Freeman, general manager of Nextel Partners. "Now in our third year, we had lofty goals for the program, especially with the economy still affecting so many people. It's great to have exceeded our goal and know our efforts are helping so many families in need."
"We're seeing an increasing number of people in need this holiday season. Thanks to Nextel Partners' program, we're able to provide them with more meals," said Kitty Tabor, product coordinator, of the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank. "We'd like to thank the company and the public for their ongoing commitment to helping make our community a better place to live."
The 'Nextel Cans For A Cause' holiday food drive is part of the company's extensive community service program, which includes in-kind contributions or wireless phones and service to community groups each year. Over the years, Nextel Partners has donated phones and free service worth thousands of dollars to schools, police, nonprofits and disaster service organizations across the country, helping organizations reduce crime in neighborhoods, improve safety in schools, operate essential programs and communicate in times of emergency.
