San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls continue to put up the wins, as they won three of four games for the second consecutive week. Overall, they've won six of their last seven games and are getting closer to clinching a playoff spot in the Pacific Division. San Diego has another busy week ahead, however, with games Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Feb. 28 @ Stockton: Jesse Bennefield and Rob Flynn provided the needed offense and Tom Lawson stopped 34 shots, leading the Gulls to their fourth straight win with a 2-1 triumph over Stockton. The Gulls led 2-1 going into the third period, but could've had a much bigger cushion if it weren't for the brilliant goaltending of Jake Moreland (37 saves). It was Lawson's turn to shine in the final stanza, as he stopped all 18 Thunder shots. The San Diego netminder finished with 34 saves.

March 1 vs. Long Beach: Patrick Levesque's power-play goal with 2:19 left in regulation broke a 2-2 tie and lifted San Diego to its fifth straight win, this time a 3-2 victory over the Ice Dogs. The Gulls had a 2-0 lead thanks to tallies by Doug MacIver and Bennefield, but Long Beach eventually tied it seven minutes into the third period. That's how the game stayed until Levesque redirected in Grady Moore's shot from the point.

March 3 vs. Las Vegas: Christian Chartier recorded two goals and an assist, Steve Crampton scored twice and Matt Dzieduszycki added three assists, leading the Wranglers to a 6-2 win over the Gulls. The first period was the story, as Las Vegas jumped out to a 4-1 lead. San Diego's Dennis Shiryaev made it a 4-2 game in the second period, but the Wranglers came back with two more goals in the third.

March 4 vs. Las Vegas: Tyler Weiman stopped all 29 shots, leading the Gulls to a hard-fought 1-0 win, before 10,337 at the ipayOne Center Saturday. Mark Wires scored the lone goal of the game on the power play, 10:06 into the first period. The rest of the game belonged to Weiman and his defense, retaining the one-goal lead. It was the first-ever 1-0 game played at the ipayOne Center/Sports Arena.

Individual Notes: Weiman is 3-0-0 with a 1.64 goals-against average, one shutout and .950 save percentage since being re-assigned from Lowell. He's stopped 115-121 shots in four games (three of which were starts)... Steve Hildenbrand has 16 points (6g, 10a) in the last 12 games... Wires has 11 points (5g, 6a) in the last eight games...

Team Notes: San Diego's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 11 points (combination of points gained by the Gulls and points lost by Stockton)... The Gulls just completed a stretch of eight games in 11 days (6-2-0)... The Gulls have killed 112 of 124 penalties in their last 21 games (90.3 percent)... San Diego has scored a power-play goal in eight of its last 10 games... In its last 17 games, 12 have been decided by one goal...

The Gulls close out their four-game homestand Wednesday, as the Dayton Bombers make their first-ever trip to San Diego. Game-time is set for 7:05 p.m. San Diego will play in Fresno Friday and Long Beach Saturday before hosting Fresno Sunday.
