Phoenix RoadRunners News Release

Phoenix, Ariz. - WEEK RECORD: 0-3-0 - SEASON RECORD: 18-34-3 - 6th WEST DIVISION

‘RUNNERS REWIND: The Phoenix RoadRunners, depleted with injuries, were swept by the Idaho Steelheads in a three-game series in Boise last week. The RoadRunners have lost six in a row and are six points behind the fifth place Victoria Salmon Kings in the West Division standings.

Wednesday, D'Arcy McConvey tallied a pair of goals to lead the Idaho Steelheads to a 4-2 victory over the Phoenix RoadRunners in the opener of their three-game series before 3,449 at Qwest Arena.

McConvey opened the scoring for Idaho (30-18-7) at 14:27 of the first period. David Bararuk created a turnover to the right of the RoadRunners net and fed a charging McConvey cutting down the slot. McConvey took the pass and beat Phoenix goaltender Mike Mole with a shot along the ice to give the Steelheads a 1-0 lead after the first period.

The RoadRunners (18-32-3) netted the equalizer just 6:31 into the second on a two-man advantage power play goal. Brad Woods slapped a one-timer from Dave Cousineau past Idaho goaltender Steve Silverthorn to tie the game at 1-1. The Steelheads would regain the lead as Jarad Bourassa beat a screened Mole with a slap shot from the center blue line at 9:50 for a 2-1 advantage. But Shawn Snider countered just 32 seconds later when he lifted the puck over Silverthorn's left shoulder from the right-wing circle to knot the score at 2-2 at 10:22 of the period. However, it was the Steelheads who would have the period's final say. Blake Forsyth ripped a one-time slap shot past Mole from the high slot at 16:16 on the power play to give Idaho a 3-2 lead going into the second intermission.

Yet the RoadRunners were unable to come back for a third time. McConvey sealed the victory with his second goal of the night at 14:07 of the third period.

Idaho out-shot Phoenix 31-26. Mole stopped 27 shots as he fell to 14-24-3 on the season. The RoadRunners went 1-7 on the power play and held Idaho to just one power play goal on seven chances.

Friday, goaltender Steve Silverthorn stopped all 21 shots he faced and Jeremy Mylymok tallied the game's only goal as the Idaho Steelheads shutout the Phoenix RoadRunners 1-0 before 4,421 at Qwest Arena.

The Steelheads would score the only goal they would need at 5:32 of the middle frame. Greg Hornby fed Mylymok at the center blue line, and Mylymok ripped a one-time slap shot over RoadRunners goaltender Ryan Cyr's right shoulder and into the net to give Idaho a 1-0 lead and the eventual victory.

Idaho out-shot Phoenix 39-21. Cyr stopped 38 shots to suffer the tough luck defeat and fall to 0-7-0 on the season. The RoadRunners and Steelheads each went 0-4 on the power play.

Saturday, Marty Flichel tallied a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Idaho Steelheads to a 5-1 victory over the Phoenix RoadRunners and a three-game series sweep before 5,048 at Qwest Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Steelheads (32-18-7) forced RoadRunners starting goaltender Mike Mole from the game with three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Matt Reid opened the scoring when he collected David Bararuk's rebound at the left-wing circle and flipped a shot into the back of the net just 2:30 into the period to give Idaho a 1-0 lead. Jarad Bourassa made it 2-0, firing a blast from the high slot over Mole's right shoulder at 8:46. Flichel finished Mole's night with backhander from inside the left-wing circle just 1:03 seconds later to give the Steelheads a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Idaho continued their assault with two more goals in the final period. Bararuk finished a cross-ice pass from Flichel past goaltender Ryan Cyr 2:56 into the third on the power play, and Flichel netted his second of the game at 12:22 to build the lead to 5-0. Justin Quenneville broke the RoadRunners' scoreless drought of 147:36 seconds with his ninth goal of the season from the right wing circle at 17:58 to close the scoring.

Idaho out-shot Phoenix (18-34-3) 35-25. Mole stopped 14 shots in falling to 14-25-3 on the season. The RoadRunners went 0-4 on the power play while the Steelheads were 1-6 on the man advantage.

WELCOME ADDITION: While in Idaho, the RoadRunners acquired left-wing Jon Ames from the Toledo Storm in exchange for cash considerations. Ames, 23, led the Utica College Pioneers with 16 goals as a senior last season and finished second overall on the team in scoring with 26 points in 27 games. The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native recorded 34 goals and 68 points in two seasons at Utica following a transfer from the University of Connecticut. Ames had one goal and two assists in 22 games with Toledo after signing with the Storm as a free agent on December 16. He's expected to make his RoadRunners debut Tuesday against Stockton.

RAVAGED ROSTER: The RoadRunners continue to be hit hard by the injury bug during their inaugural season. Defenseman Paul Ballantyne broke his right fibula last Wednesday in Idaho and will undergo season-ending surgery in the near future. He returns to the 30-day injured reserve for the second time this year. Meanwhile, Miguel Lafleche was placed on the 7-day injured reserve last week, his third trip to the IR this season. Overall, Phoenix is among the ECHL leaders in man-games lost due to injury. The RoadRunners have placed 14 players on the injured reserve this season, nearly a full line-up, and have lost a total of 163 man-games because of injuries.

KILLING THEM OFF: Phoenix has killed off 62 of their opponent's last 73 chances on the power play over the 11 games, an 84.9% efficiency rate. The RoadRunners rank 19th in the ECHL on the penalty kill at 79.1%.

MARCH MADNESS: The RoadRunners will play 16 games over 31 days during the month of March, their busiest month by far this season. 10 of those 16 games will also be on the road.
