Sambuco Scores in Return to Waterloo But Stars Fall
November 18, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Lincoln Stars News Release
The Lincoln Stars suffered their first loss of the season when scoring first in a 6-2 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday night at Young Arena.
Lincoln (10-4) entered the weekend 8-0 when scoring first but could not overcome a five-goal Waterloo (9-5) second period. The Stars' season-best tying four-game win streak came to an end with Friday's loss.
Daniel Sambuco whacked home a loose puck in the crease to put the Stars up 1-0 at the 4:01 mark of the second for the game's first goal. DJ Hart started the sequence with a shot from the blue line that Jack Larrigan redirected off the right post. The rebound slid through the crease and goaltender Jack Spicer was unable to cover up the rebound. Sambuco, who played in 21 games with Waterloo last season, scored his fourth goal of the season to give Lincoln the early lead.
Carson Buydens scored his first USHL goal after tapping home a feed from Mason Marcellus. That apple from Marcellus moved him into a tie with teammate Boston Buckberger and Jayden Perron of the Chicago Steel for first place in the USHL with 13 assists.
Despite scoring the first goal the Stars could not overcome an offensive onslaught from the Black Hawks. Waterloo outshot Lincoln 18-2 in the first period and, though they weren't able to score in the opening 20 minutes, busted through in the second period with five consecutive goals following Sambuco's opening tally. An early third-period goal gave Waterloo six unanswered goals until Buydens scored his first goal since joining the Stars.
The Stars remain in second place in the Western Conference with 20 points, two behind first-place Waterloo. The Force are idle on Saturday so Lincoln can move into a tie for first with a win. Waterloo sits just two points behind Lincoln for second place.
