Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - In an instant game-of-the-year candidate, the Chicago Steel (10- 5-0-1; 21 pts.) overcame a two-goal third period deficit before Jake Livanavage delivered a game winning goal in overtime to defeat the Youngstown Phantoms (5-5-2- 1; 13 pts.) 5-4 Friday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

In a contest that featured an abundance of both skillful playmaking and skirmishes after the whistle, the Steel scored the last three goals of the game to earn their tenth victory of the season.

The Steel came out of the gate strong with a solid first ten minutes of play.

Jack Harvey, the reigning USHL Forward of the Week, opened the scoring. After teammate Michael Emerson forced a Youngstown turnover in its own zone, Harvey corralled a deflected pass from Grayden Slipec and strode down the middle of the ice to beat Youngstown goalie Colin Winn, beating him through the five-hole with a smooth forehand shot.

Harvey has a goal in each of his last six contests, all multi-point games, and it was the third consecutive game that Harvey has scored Chicago's first goal.

Just 15 seconds later, Livanavage led a Steel breakout with a two-line pass to Zam Plante at the Youngstown blue line. Plante spun a perfect no-look, backhand pass to Cameron Johnson streaking to the net. When Johnson's shot was denied by Winn's right pad, teammate Nick Moldenhauer pounced on the rebound for his 11th goal of the season.

The Phantoms took advantage of their second power play of the night. After winning the initial draw in the offensive zone, Jake Rozzi sent a cross-ice pass from the left point to the tape of William Whitelaw inside the right faceoff dot who beat Steel goaltender Christian Manz for the Phantoms first tally.

Like Chicago earlier in the period, Youngstown wasted no time finding its second tally of the night. Just 70 seconds later, the Phantoms hustled up ice to create a 3-on-2 opportunity which left Matthew Perkins unaccounted for. Perkins caught a pass from

Breken Smith as he swooped down the left side and ripped a wrister past the glove of Manz to tie the game at 2-2.

The Phantoms took the lead in the second period with their second power play goal of the night. While set up in the Steel zone, Rozzi sent a puck through traffic towards the Steel cage which hit the left pad of Manz but stayed available for Shane Lachance to tap in his ninth goal of the season.

Immediately following another Chicago penalty, the Phantoms controlled the offensive- zone draw. After a feed from Andrew Strathmann, Rozzi found himself alone at the left point where he skated to the top of the circle and sent a low wrister just inside the right post for his third point of the night (1G, 2A) and a 4-2 Phantoms lead.

Chicago had led 2-0 midway through the first but now found itself trailing 4-2 heading to the third.

After a Steel power play early in the third produced the third crossbar of the night for Chicago, Jordan Brisson was denied by Winn on a breakaway to maintain the two-goal advantage for Youngstown.

The Steel cut the lead to 4-3 with a Michael Emerson goal with 12:10 remaining in the third. Graden Slipec found Jack Harvey cruising across the Youngstown blue line.

Harvey dished the puck left to Michael Emerson who cut to the net. Emerson was tripped but in the process, the puck carried towards the net and crossed the line just before Emerson crashed into Winn.

Following the goal, Emerson's 10th of the year, Winn was attended to on the Youngstown bench for an apparent equipment issue and, after a delay of several minutes, was replaced by Jacob Fowler in net.

After an interference call put the Steel back on the power play, Anthony Dowd made a terrific play to keep the puck in at the blue line. Macklin Celebrini quickly dished a pass to Nick Moldenhauer who sent the puck to Mick Thompson camped in front of the net.

Thompson had time to deke Fowler and deliver the game-tying goal, his 8th of the season.

With 3:19 remaining and the teams skating 4-on- 4, Youngstown's Reese Laubach was called for a charging major and game misconduct after leveling Steel goalie Christian Manz. In the ensuing scrum, the Steel were called for a roughing minor, setting up nearly two minutes of end-to-end 3-on-3 action.

After Manz made a big save to keep the game even, the Steel went on the now three- minute power play with just over a minute remaining in regulation. The Phantoms penalty kill held strong, forcing overtime.

In the extra session, the Steel, now on a 4-on-3 power play, methodically worked the puck around the perimeter until Jake Livanavage found an opening and snaped a wrist shot over the blocker of Fowler for the game-winning goal.

Each team found success on the powerplay with Chicago going 2-for-4 and Youngstown 3-for-5. Chicago outshot Youngstown 38-33 with Christian Manz stopping 29 of those 33 shots to earn his seventh victory of the season.
