Hawks' Win Worth the Wait
November 18, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A five-goal second period explosion propelled the Waterloo Black Hawks past the Lincoln Stars 6-2 at Young Arena on Friday.
The game was delayed 10 minutes by a clock malfunction just before the opening faceoff. When the puck did drop, the Hawks had to continue waiting for their offensive breakthrough. The Stars were not credited with a shot on goal until the game was nearly 14 minutes old, and Waterloo owned an 18-2 shots edge at intermission. Nonetheless, the matchup was goalless.
Lincoln opened the scoring 4:01 out of intermission, moments after a power play had ended. D.J. Hart's shot from the right point squirted into the crease and was shoveled across the goal line by Daniel Sambuco.
The game's next goal came moments after another Lincoln power play ended; this time it was a Black Hawks equalizer. Owen Baker pressured goalie Cameron Whitehead behind the net, forcing a turnover. Bringing the puck from behind the goal, Baker set up Garrett Schifsky - just out of the penalty box - to score into the open net at 7:43.
Another turnover pushed the Hawks into the lead at 11:00. Zach Bade made the play to keep the puck in the zone, eventually resulting in a shot by Sam Rinzel and David Klee's first USHL goal on the rebound.
Baker made another fine play to build the lead at 15:46 while Waterloo was shorthanded. Delivering a hit, stealing the puck, and feeding it out to center in quick succession, Baker's efforts sprang Myles Hilman for a breakaway goal. Hilman cut through the left circle and across the top of the crease to score on a backhander.
Aaron Pionk struck next at 18:02, using a screen at the front of the net to beat Whitehead from the top of the left circle. Then James Hong produced Waterloo's fifth goal with 8.3 seconds left before intermission while the Hawks were on a five-on-three power play. Sam Rinzel's pass stretched the ice, and Hong stepped into the zone, triggering his shot from the top of the right circle. Goalie Jack Spicer also had a hand in the goal, picking up his third assist of the season.
Ninety seconds into the third period, Spicer denied a penalty shot by Brennan Ali. Instead of the Stars closing in with that chance, Waterloo pulled farther away less than a minute later. Schifsky sped up right wing, came to a hard stop in the right circle, then slung the puck across the slot to Gavin O'Connell to score into an open side.
Lincoln did record the game's final goal at 9:23 when Mason Marcellus set up Carson Buydens for a tap-in.
Spicer made 25 saves for the win as Waterloo outshot Lincoln 46-27.
The same two teams square off again on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Good seats are still available. The game will be the Black Hawks' Autism Awareness Night. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
