Capitols Welcome Green Bay for Two-Game Series
November 18, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
The Capitols welcome the Gamblers for a two-game series this weekend at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena. The games will be the second and third matchups against Green Bay and the first two of three straight with the in-state rival. The first time these two teams met came on October 7th. In that game, Green Bay got out to a 3-0 lead in the second period. Madison battled their way back with three unanswered goals to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Quinn Finley provided the dagger to the heart of Green Bay's heart to give the Capitols a 4-3 victory.
Madison comes into the weekend with a record of 5-6-1 and sitting in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The record that the Caps have was improved over their last two games going 1-0-0-1 against the Chicago Steel. Head Coach and General Manager had the following to say about the Capitols last two games against Chicago:
"We looked at it like it was a weekend series, and we took three out of four [points] from the best team in the East. Anytime you can get a point in this league, it's hard to win, and Chicago is a very talented team. We've got to clean some things up because it should've been a four point stretch for us."
The team has to turn the page from the games against Chicago, though, as Green Bay sits in a tie for second place in the conference coming into the weekend. The Gamblers are 5-2-0 since the start of October against teams besides the Chicago Steel and Madison Capitols, but in games against those two teams, the team is 1-2-1.
The staff behind the Capitols bench thinks that Madison has to focus on things other than the opponent this week. Leivermann touched on this by saying:
"We've got to just focus on us right now. I think that we can't think about other teams. We've got to control what we can control. When we play our game, it shows. When we play down and forget to stick to the game plan, it also shows. We're a very up and down team right now. I think for us, moving into this weekend, we've got to get good goaltending, we have to have very simplified defensemen on the back end, and then, we have to our our forwards doing a good job playing defense. That's the only thing we have to focus on this weekend. Us. We'll focus on the small things, which is keeping the puck out of our net. That seemed to be our Achilles' heel. We can score with anybody, but we have to keep the puck out of our net."
One of the two Madison backstops that will have to focus on keeping the puck out of the Capitols net this weekend is Rastislav Elias. Leivermann talked highly upon his debut performance against Chicago on Saturday night. The games against Green Bay are big for Elias as he played in 20 games for the Gamblers last season. These will be his first games against his former club since joining the Capitols.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm on both Friday and Saturday night against Green Bay. On Friday, it's $1 Beer Night followed by our Youth Hockey Bonanza on Saturday. Tickets can be found for all Capitols games at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
