Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs added a potent bat to the lineup on Wednesday, signing veteran outfielder Rafael Alvarez. To make room for Alvarez on the roster, Lincoln released outfielder Deacon Burns.
Alvarez is in his 16th season as a professional baseball player, a career that began in 1994 after he was signed by the Minnesota Twins organization as an undrafted free agent. He spent seven years in the minors for the Twins, reaching as high as Class AAA in both 1997 and 1999. After the 2000 season, Rafael moved to the independent ranks, and he was named the 2004 Central League Player of the Year when he played for Pensacola. Alvarez returned to the Mexican League for nearly a full season in 2005, although he went back to Pensacola late in the year, and then spent 2006 in Class AA with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He played in both Mexico and the short-lived South Coast League in 2007, before coming back to Pensacola for a third stint in 2008. Rafael stayed with Pelicans until his release earlier this month. He hit .269 in 50 games for the Pelicans this year, stealing 19 bases. Alvarez is a career .293 hitter, with a career on-base percentage of .385.
Burns, who joined the Saltdogs late last season, hit .231 with two homers and 20 RBI this season for Lincoln. He appeared in 63 games, mostly in right field.
The current Lincoln Saltdogs homestand runs through July 30. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
