St. Paul Saints News Release
ST PAUL, MN (July 29, 2009) - For the second consecutive start Mitch Wylie was outstanding as he led the St. Paul Saints to their fourth straight win, a 7-1 drubbing of the Sioux Falls Canaries Wednesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,516 fans. The Saints have now won five of their last six games since the All-Star break.
Coming off a 7.0 inning shutout performance last Thursday against the Lincoln Saltdogs, Wylie once again dominated the opposition. The 32-year-old veteran had pinpoint control all night long. Wylie went 7.2 innings allowing just one run on four hits while walking none and striking out five. For the second consecutive start Wylie did not issue a free pass.
Wylie had plenty of support from his offense as well. The Saints jumped on Canaries starter Ben Moore early and often. Alex Fonseca started off the bottom of the first with a single and promptly swiped second base, his 10th steal of the year. One batter later Jason Cooper laced a single into right field to score Fonseca and give the Saints a 1-0 lead. After Brent Krause walked, Josh Alley roped a base hit into right to drive in Cooper and put the Saints up 2-0.
The Saints would add two more in the second. Anthony Norman, making his first start in ten days, led off the inning with a triple. Steve Butler then slapped a single up the middle to give the Saints a 3-0 advantage. The base hit extended Butler's hitting streak to seven games. Following a successful sacrifice by Fonseca, Andrew Schmiesing singled to bring home Butler as the Saints took 4-0 lead.
Schmiesing singled again with one out in the fourth and scored on a Jason Cooper two-run blast, his fourth home run of the year. Leading 6-0, Krause then showed off his speed with a triple to the gap in left center. Alley, the next batter, dropped a single into center, keeping the Saints in charge at 7-1.
The Canaries plated their lone run of the game in the third inning on a solo homer by Patrick Reilly, his third of the season. Sioux Falls has scored only four runs in the first three games of the series, and scored just one run in the last 25 innings.
Moore lasted just 5.0 innings for the Canaries, allowing seven runs on 13 hits while walking two and striking out four. Amad Stephens and Patrick Lawler did their best to keep their team in the game, combining to deal 3.0 scoreless innings.
Kyle Foster replaced Wylie in the eighth, pitching 1.1 perfect innings. Jeff Eure got the nod behind the plate for the Saints, his first start at catcher in over three years.
The Saints will go for the four game sweep of the Canaries Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Tom Buske (2-2, 4.42) to the mound against Canaries LHP Ryan Ford (2-6, 4.97). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard live on Relevant Radio 1330. It will be Irish Night presented by Leinekugel's.
