CANARIES LOSE FIFTH IN A ROW

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-13) were defeated 7-1 by the St. Paul Saints (10-9) on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium, and in the process the Birds current losing streak extended to five games, matching a season high suffered two other times this season, including one other time in the second half.

St. Paul took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Alex Fonseca reached base on an infield single, and then stole second base to get in scoring position. Jason Cooper singled to right field to score Fonseca, and advanced to second on the throw home as the Saints took a 1-0 lead. Cooper was driven home on a single by Josh Alley, and after an inning, St. Paul led by a pair, 2-0.

The Saints doubled their lead in the second. Anthony Norman opened the inning with a triple. Norman scored on a single by Steve Butler to make it a 3-0 game. Butler went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fonseca, and scored on a single by Andrew Schmiesing to put St. Paul ahead by a score of 4-0.

The Birds got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Patrick Reilly hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot, to get the Canaries within three, 4-1.

St. Paul pulled away in the fourth. Cooper hit a two-run homer, his fourth long-ball of the season to make it 6-1 in favor of the Saints. Brent Krause followed with a triple, and then scored on a single by Josh Alley. After four innings, St. Paul led 7-1.

Mitch Wylie (7-5) pitched 7.2 innings, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out five to get the win for the Saints. Ben Moore (4-7) gave up seven runs on 13 hits to break a string of three quality starts in taking the loss.
