Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
EL PASO, Texas - The El Paso Diablos completed a reversal of the first two games of this four game series against the Shreveport-Bossier Captains on Wednesday night, beating the Captains and lefty Logan Williamson 8-4 behind righty Josh Neitz at Cohen Stadium to take the final two contests an earn a series split.
The Captains (36-32, 14-6 2nd half) had a good chance to take an early lead, with Bryan Sabatella and Richard Paz singling to start the contest. But Christopher Garcia bounced one to third for a step-and-throw double play, and Andres Rodriguez struck out to end the inning.
Williamson (8-3) got around a jam in the first as well, and got through the second in three batters, but ran into trouble in the third. With one out, Arnoldo Ponce doubled into left-center, and Jorge Alvarez doubled just inside the rightfield line to give the Diablos (30-37, 9-10) a 1-0 lead. After a groundout by Juan Camacho, Mike Provencher tripled and then scored on a wild pitch to complete a three-run inning.
El Paso added another run in the fourth, and then chased Williamson with a four-spot in the fifth. Jeff Vincent doubled with one out, and then with two outs, Hector Bernal tripled down the rightfield line and Bobby Andrews singled him in. After Kennard Bibbs singled, Derrick Miramontes came in to replace Williamson, and gave up RBI singles to Ponce and Alvarez to make it 8-0.
After the jam in the first, Neitz (4-2) sailed through the next four innings, only allowing a double in the fourth and a walk in the fifth. But in the sixth, he was charged with an unearned run, as Sabatella singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Garcia. The Captains chased him in the seventh, getting three runs off Neitz and reliever Joe Klein. But Klein got a comebacker from Garcia to end the inning.
Neitz ended up being charged with four runs (three earned), on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts to get the victory. He has now pitched twice against Shreveport-Bossier, giving up five runs (three earned) on 12 hits in 13 1/3 innings.
The Captains' comeback attempt continued in the eighth, as they loaded the bases with two outs against righty Yury Santana, but Angelo Fermin grounded to first to end the inning without anyone scoring. Then in the ninth, Shreveport-Bossier got two two-out hits to bring the potential tying run to the on-deck circle, but Selwyn Langaigne's drive to deep right-center was run down by defensive substitute David Washington to give the Diablos the win and the split of the four-game series.
Notes: Matt Petty pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief, with a season-high five strikeouts, including four in the sixth inning alone as a runner reached on a passed ball...Williamson's outing was his shortest start and most runs allowed of the season...The Captains ended their season at Cohen Stadium at 4-6. El Paso makes one more trip to Shreveport in late August...Shreveport-Bossier remains a game and a half ahead of Pensacola, who lost Wednesday afternoon at Wichita...Garcia has had at least two hits in seven straight games...The Captains had scored 22 of 27 runs at one point in the series before El Paso scored 19 of the next 23, with Shreveport-Bossier getting the final four late in the final ballgame...Williamson's last loss was June 9 at St. Paul.
