Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Lincoln Saltdogs lost a shootout in Sioux Falls on Friday, dropping a 13-10 decision to the Canaries. Lincoln falls to 25-21 on the second half of the season, and surrenders first place in the American Association North.

The Saltdogs held a 10-7 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth, but the Canaries loaded the bases with one out for their best hitter, Beau Torbert. Torbert blasted the first pitch he saw from Justin Knoff (0-1) deep over the fence in dead center, a grand slam that put Sioux Falls ahead 11-10. The Canaries tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning, and kept the Lincoln bats quiet over the final three innings to lock down the victory.

The game was a shootout from the opening inning, after Lincoln scored first on an RBI single by Rafael Alvarez. Sioux Falls answered with four in the bottom of the first, including a 3-run homer by Torbert, his first of two long balls on the night. The Saltdogs tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth, on an RBI double by Phil Hawke and a two-run homer by Argelis Nuñez, but the Canaries took a 7-4 lead with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Lincoln, however, took the lead back with four runs in the top of the fifth. Shawn McGill drove in a run with a fielder's choice grounder. Gavin Dickey followed with a two-run homer, his first as a Saltdog, to tie it, and Shea McFeely then hit a solo homer to put the Dogs up 8-7. Lincoln tacked on two more in the sixth when Josh Burrus tripled and scored on an Albenis Machado groundout, and Nuñez hit his second homer of the night, before the Canaries' rally in the bottom of the sixth.

Nuñez finished the night 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Burrus finished with three hits and three runs scored, falling a homer shy of the cycle, while Rafael Alvarez had three hits and an RBI as well.

The two teams play game three of their four-game series Saturday night at 7:05. Righty Jim Paduch will make the start for Lincoln.
