Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (19-28) scored the game's first four runs, but fell 11-5 to the Lincoln Saltdogs (26-21) in front of 3,854 on Saturday night at the Birdcage. The Lincoln win, along with losses by St. Paul and Wichita, puts the Saltdogs back in the driver seat for a Second Half North Division Championship.

The Canaries blasted their way to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. A scoreless tie was broken up when Tim Hutting singled and Cory Harris followed with a two-run homer. The tenth home run of the season for Harris put the Canaries ahead by a pair, 2-0. Later in the inning, Trevor Lawhorn walked and Patrick Reilly hit his eighth home run of the season. The second two-run shot of the inning put the Canaries ahead 4-0.

It was all downhill from there for the Birds. In the top of the fifth inning, Lincoln rallied for four runs to tie the game. Shawn McGill started the rally with a one-out walk. McGill scored on a double by Gavin Dickey, Dickey came in on a single by Shea McFeely, McFeely advanced to third on a single by Brandon Jones that was misplayed in left field by Beau Torbert for an extra base, and Josh Burrus singled to score McFeely and Jones. At the midpoint of the game, the Saltdogs had rallied for a 4-4 tie.

In the sixth, Lincoln took the lead on a leadoff home run by Phil Hawke. Hawke's 12th home run of the season put the Saltdogs in front, 5-4. Lincoln got another run when McGill drew his second walk of the game, and Dickey delivered another RBI double to put Lincoln ahead by two, 6-4.

Lincoln would tack on five runs in the seventh inning to pull away for an 11-4 lead. Trevor Lawhorn would drive in one run with an eighth inning single, but that is all the Canaries would get in the 11-5 loss.

Jino Gonzalez (4-7) gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits in six innings to suffer the loss for the Birds. Jim Paduch (7-5) pitched six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits to get his seventh win of the season.

The Canaries will conclude the 2009 American Association season on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. The game will be a "Dog Day Afternoon" presented by Hidden Paradise Pet Resort with dogs allowed admission for $2 which will be donated to the Second Chance Animal Rescue Center.
