Nice Night for Neitz

August 29, 2009 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release

El Paso, TX - Josh Neitz made sure that his 2009 season would end on a high note as his complete game victory led El Paso to a 5-3 win over the Fort Worth Cats on Saturday night. It was the second complete game for Neitz this season and the fifth this season for El Paso who earned at least a split in their final series of the year.

The veteran Neitz (6-3) allowed 12 hits on the night, but he was able to bear down to limit the damage throughout the outing. Neitz struck out only two but also walked only one. He didn't make things easy on himself in the ninth as he allowed the tying runs to get to second and third with no one out, but was able to settle down to get the next three Cats out without allowing a run.

Neitz also owes a lot to his catcher Eddy Rodriguez who led the offense and defense. Rodriguez was 2-4 at the plate with an RBI, while in the field he threw out both base runners who attempted stolen bases against him. Eddy has now thrown out 8 out of last 11 attempted base stealers. The Cats had three hits with two of them being doubles in the sixth inning but were unable to score any runs. Rodriguez threw out Bryan Fryer trying to steal second and after a double by Cameron Blair, Eddy picked off Blair at second to prevent him from coming in on the double that followed that.

El Paso never trailed in the game, but the Cats made sure the game stayed close throughout. El Paso led 2-0 after four innings but Fort Worth came back to tie the game in the fifth. El Paso immediately took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth on a Kennard Bibbs sacrifice fly. Fort Worth tied the game again in the seventh inning, but El Paso took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning when an Arnoldo Ponce RBI double brought in Jonathan Reynoso. The Diablos walked their way to their final run by putting together four straight walks.

The Diablos play their 2009 season finale on Sunday night at 6:05. Garvis Romero (3-3, 5.45) starts against the Cats' Nat Harris (5-7, 4.79). It is a .25 Cent Sunday as the Diablos offere .25 Cent hot dogs and ice cream. Fans can listen along online at www.diablos.com
