EL PASO - Josh Neitz allowed just two earned runs in a complete-game effort as the Diablos defeated the Cats 5-3 on Saturday night at Cohen Stadium.
The former Cat scattered 12 hits throughout his nine innings of work, but survived a ninth-inning rally by the Cats as they had runners at second and third when the game ended.
The Diablos took an early lead in the game in the second inning. With one out, Jeff Vincent and Eddie Rodriguez reached on consecutive infield singles. With both runners on the move, Gerardo Verastegui hit a grounder to the right side on which Isa Garcia made a sprawling stop and threw him out at first. On the play, Vincent scored from first for a 1-0 lead.
They made it 2-0 in the fourth as Vincent reached on a two-out, stole second base and then scored on an Eddie Rodriguez RBI single.
The Cats knotted the game at two in the fifth. Michael Bell started the inning with a walk. one out later, Kelley Gulledge doubled off the wall in left, scoring Bell. Isa Garcia followed with a single to left and Gulledge scored after the ball was mishandled in left.
The Diablos responded quickly with a run in the bottom of the fifth as David Washington singled to start the inning, advanced to third on a two-base throwing error by Ryan Riddle and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kennard Bibbs.
Fort Worth tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Isa Garcia scoring Ryan Patterson from first. But the Diablos had an answer in the bottom of the inning. With Dustin Cameron on in relief, Reynoso drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on an Arnoldo Ponce double.
The Diablos added an insurance run in the eighth as reliever Scott Vander Weg walked four straight batters to bring home the fifth El Paso run of the night.
Fort Worth threatened in the ninth with a leadoff single by John Allen followed by a double by Bell, but Neitz retired three in a row to end the game. With the win, Neitz improved to 6-3 on the season.
