Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, were fishing for their fourth straight win in game two versus the Fresno Falcons, but couldn't return from a four goal deficit as the Falcons swooped away with the 5-2 victory.
The Falcons found paydirt at 8:19 into the first period as Dustin VanBallegooie scored his third goal of the season. A floating shot skipped past screened Netminder Bryan Bridges, who got the nod to start in his fourth professional game. Almost three minutes later, Fresno gained a 2-0 lead in scoring on their second powerplay of the game. Brady Leisenring snapped a shot from the left circle for his fourth goal of the season. The Falcons outshot Victoria 17-4 in the first frame.
Fresno added another two unanswered goals in the second period. On the powerplay, Tyler Kindle's shot from the left circle bounced off a skate in front of the net and trickled between the legs of Bridges. Fresno made it 4-0 at 12:38 into the second, while earning their third powerplay goal. In a 5-on-3 advantage, Defenseman Tom Walsh fed John Wroblewski wide open in the slot for the goal. Fresno led in shots after the second period, 33-11.
The Salmon Kings clipped the Falcons' wings in the third and outscored the visiting squad 2-1. David Wrigley lit the lamp for his second goal of the season, finishing off a cross crease pass from F.P. Guenette in the 5-on-3 powerplay. With 4:28 left in the final frame, the Salmon Kings climbed with two goals as Adam Taylor scored his first goal of the season on another Victoria powerplay. Taylor jumped on the ice in a line change and headed straight to the net to get a pass from Gustav Engman and beat Goaltender Ryan MacDonald, who replaced an injured Scott Stirling with halfway through the third.
The Salmon Kings tried to close the gap until Fresno's Luke Curtin scored an empty net goal to seal the win.
Final score: 5-2 Fresno
Stirling notched his fifth win of the season, and Bridges suffered his second loss. Victoria was 2 for 17 on the power play and Fresno went 3 for 11 with the man advantage. The Falcons outshot the Salmon Kings 40-28. Victoria (4-5-1) and Fresno (7-2-0) faceoff for the final game of the three-game series tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:05 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
