Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, wrapped up a three-game series at home versus the Fresno Falcons with a 4-3 win in a Sunday shout out. Julien Ellis, a contracted Canucks goaltender, got his fourth start for the Salmon Kings and brushed away 41 of 44 Fresno shots and veteran Wes Goldie hooked the gamewinner.

The Falcons clawed away the first goal of the game in a 5-on-3 powerplay with only 56 seconds left in the first frame. Ellis saved John Morlang's shot, but the rebound sat in the crease and was tapped in by Brady Leisenring. Victoria was outshot 13-7 in the first.

The Salmon Kings sparked in the second period as Captain Kiel McLeod scored his eighth goal of the season. Victoria native Mike Stutzel skated along the right boards and across the blueline and fed McLeod at the top of the circle. McLeod beat Goaltender Ryan MacDonald over the shoulder for the 1-1 tie. Both teams applied pressure and had scoring chances, but the score remained even until 13 seconds left in the period. Rob McFeeters finished off a backhanded pass from Luke Curtin as the Falcons went ahead 2-1 on a shorthanded tally.

Victoria followed with its own shorthanded goal in the third period, as Wes Goldie kicked the puck off the boards for a breakaway and fired the puck past MacDonald for the 2-2 tie. The Salmon Kings took their first lead of the game at 6:33 into the third. On the powerplay, Adam Taylor won the faceoff in Falcon territory and swept the puck to Gustav Engman at the point and although MacDonald got a piece of the shot, the puck trickled through the five-hole.

Fresno fought back five minutes later with their second shorthanded goal of the game. Josh Prudden tallied his fourth goal of the season, capitalizing on a pass from wingman John Wroblewski. With the game all tied up 3-3, Wes Goldie scored his second of the night to put the Salmon Kings back on top.

In the Salmon Kings sixth powerplay, David Wrigley spotted Goldie perched in front of the net and a quick wristshot gave Victoria the 4-3 lead with 5:26 remaining. The penalty-kill squad and Ellis kept the Falcons from nesting a score, and Victoria won the three-game series.

Final score: 4-3 Victoria

Ellis earned his third straight win, and MacDonald was handed his second consecutive loss. Victoria was 1 for 7 on the power play and Fresno went 1 for 10 with the man advantage. The Salmon Kings outshot the Falcons 45-44. Victoria (5-5-1) will stay at home to face the Stockton Thunder (6-1-1) and Fresno (7-3-0) faceoff against Utah (3-6-2) next week.
