
Phoenix Slows Up Ice Dogs 5-3

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Justin Aikins tallied a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Phoenix RoadRunners over the Long Beach Ice Dogs 5-3 before 2,013 at the Long Beach Arena in ECHL action Saturday.
Phoenix (6-6-0) came out flying from the start scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes. Off a Long Beach turnover at the blue line, Brett Smith found Justin Aikins in front of the net and Aikins tapped the puck by Ice Dogs goaltender Jeff Weber at 8:45 of the first period to give the RoadRunners a 1-0 lead. Scott May increased the lead to two 1:15 seconds following the Aikins goal when he beat Weber with a slap shot from the blue line at 10:00 of the first on the power play.
Long Beach (1-8-2) opened the scoring in the second period as Gary Gladue collected his own rebound and snapped the puck past RoadRunners goaltender Josh Tordjman at 3:45 to cut the RoadRunners' lead to 2-1. But Tommy Maxwell pounced on Alexandre Rouleau's rebound in front of the net and tipped it by Weber at 6:57 of the second to give Phoenix their two-goal lead back at 3-1. Joe Dusbabek extended the lead to 4-1 with a power play goal at 10:10. Jeff Mason capped a four-goal second period as he scored from the blue line at 19:27 on the power play to bring the Ice Dogs back to within two goals at 4-2.
Aikins tallied his second of the game at 7:44 of the third period to give the RoadRunners a 5-2 lead before Ash Goldie capped the scoring at 14:14.
Long Beach and Phoenix each fired 29 shots on goal. Tordjman stopped 26 shots to collect the win and improve to 4-4-0 on the season. The RoadRunners went 2-6 on the power play while Long Beach was 1-4.
Notes: Phoenix finished their three-game road trip with a record of 2-1-0 and their six-game-in-eight-nights stretch with a record of 3-3-0...Maxwell's goal was the first of his professional career...The RoadRunners picked up their first win in Long Beach since Dec. 4, 2005...Phoenix made two trades Saturday acquiring forward Ren Fauci from Charlotte for future considerations and trading Fauci to Columbia (S.C.) in exchange for the ECHL rights to right-wing Chanse Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is currently on loan to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League.
