Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre played host to the Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces tonight, for game two of the three game set. The Salmon Kings were shutout for the first time this season, losing to the Aces 8-0.

At 13:30 of the first period, Aces leading scorer Barrett Heisten set-up a tight give and go with Olivier Filion. Heisten received the pass back from Filion and only had to tap it into Goaltender David Currie's wide open cage, to give the Aces the 1-0 lead.

Alaska's 19th best powerplay finally clicked at 16:35. The Salmon Kings held them off the board last night, but they could not hold back the crisp passing of the Aces on their first man advantage. Defenseman Matt Shasby thread a few needles to Forward Mike Scott wide open in front of the net and Scott just had to tap it past Currie, who had no chance on either of the Aces goals in the first period.

The second period almost snuck by without incident but the Aces were able to extend their lead to 3-0 with their second powerplay goal, at 17:43. Shasby snuck in from the blueline and posted in front of Currie. The shot came from the point and Shasby was able to get his stick on the puck, deflecting it up over the glove of the helpless Salmon Kings goalie.

The Aces started the third period on the powerplay and made the Salmon Kings pay early, extending their lead to 4-0. Currie came up with a couple huge saves back to back, but he failed to close his glove on the puck which fell into the crease for Heisten to finish, he recorded his second of the night at 1:13.

The Aces kept coming at the Salmon Kings adding four more before the end, first Cam Keith scored, followed by goals from Ryan Gaucher, Joe Talbot and John-Scott Dickson to round out the score sheet. The Aces out-shot the Salmon Kings 33-27. Victoria finished 0-7 on the powerplay, while Alaska converted 5-8 of their opportunities with the man advantage.

Currie is charged the loss and his record moves to 3-3-0, while Campbell River, BC native Matt Underhill earns his ninth win and second shutout of the season.

The three game series finishes on Monday night at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
