Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
Long Beach, Calif. - Jeff Drummond tallied his first two professional goals and goaltender Greg Hewitt stopped all 24 shots he faced to lead the Long Beach Ice Dogs to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Phoenix RoadRunners before 1811 at the Long Beach Arena in ECHL action Saturday.
Drummond got the Ice Dogs (13-11-2) on the board when he slipped a backhand shot past RoadRunners' goaltender Mike Mole from the top of the crease at 10:40 for a 1-0 lead. Long Beach extended their lead to 2-0 at 17:29. Drummond charging through the slot took a centering pass from Ash Goldie in the corner and beat Mole with a wrist shot over the right shoulder for the tally.
Chris Kenady kept it going for the Ice Dogs to start the second period. Kenady's shot along the ice from the right-wing corner kicked off Mole's pads and trickled into the cage just 1:07 into the second period to give Long Beach a 3-0 lead. Luke Fritshaw put an end to Mole's night when after an unsuccessful clearing attempt, Fritshaw collected the puck at the right point and put a wrist shot over the goaltender's glove for a 4-0 advantage. Justin Aikens capped the scoring for the Ice Dogs with a power play goal at 12:02 to make it 5-0 after two periods.
Long Beach out-shot the RoadRunners (8-13-2) 33-24. Mole stopped 13 shots in falling to 4-9-2 on the season. Phoenix went 0-3 on the power play.
Notes: Phoenix has given up the opening goal in four straight games. The RoadRunners are 3-10-2 when allowing the first goal this season...There were 10 fighting majors handed out in the third period...Former RoadRunners' forward Blake Robson has one assist in five games since signing with the Ice Dogs back on December 5.
Phoenix returns to America West Arena at 5PM on Sunday as they close out the weekend with the Bakersfield Condors. For more information or to order tickets, call (602) 462-GOAL or purchase online at www.ticketmaster.com.
