Hillsboro Hops News Release
TONIGHT: On the mound for the Hops will be LHP Cody Reed. The big lefty made his first start of the year against Spokane and threw 4 hitless and scoreless innings, but did not record enough outs to qualify for the win. Salem-Keizer will send RHP Nathanael Santiago to the hill, who threw four shutout innings himself last time out.
2014 vs. SALEM-KEIZER: Hillsboro and Salem- Keizer split their twelve meetings in 2014, each team going 6-6 against the other. Of all the teams in the Northwest League, the Hops struggle most with the Volcanoes, posting a 9-15 record against them since the 2013 inaugural season.
SLOPPY DEFENSE: Lauded as one of the top defensive infields in minor league baseball to start the season, the Hops have struggled in the field. With another two errors last night, the Hops have now made 17 in their first seven games. HARLEY TIME: A 4th round selection by the Arizona
Diamondbacks in the 2015 draft, RHP Breckin Williams earned the moniker "Harley Time," during his tenure as a Missouri Tiger. He got the name for his ritual sprint from the bullpen to the pitcher's mound. Legend has it, the nickname was bestowed upon Williams because he is "always revved up."
NEHRIR IN RAREFIED AIR: How's this for hot? OF Zach Nehrir is 8x9 in his last two games. He has posted back-to-back four hit games, which are the 9th and 10th such occurrences in Hillsboro Hops history.
ANOTHER STACKED COACHING STAFF: The 2014 Hillsboro Hops had one of the best coaching staffs across Minor League Baseball, with J.R. House at the helm, Doug Drabek as the pitching coach, Mark Grace as the hitting coach, and Ben Petrick as a special consultant. Drabek and Petrick will reprise their roles with the Hops in 2015, while House has been promoted to run the Advanced-A Visalia Rawhide, who have already won the first half of the California League. Mark Grace was promoted to assistant hitting coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Taking over for Grace this year is Javier Colina, a 14-year minor-league veteran. Shelley Duncan takes over for the Hops in his first experience as a manager at any level.
LAST NIGHT: The Hops jumped ahead early and never looked back as they cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Volcanoes. Zach Nehrir had another four- hit day, and Jared Miller turned in another dominant performance, recording his second win of the season in as many starts. The Hops seek the sweep tonight.
A DOMINICAN MIDDLE INFIELD: All standing 5'8" or under, weighing 170 pounds or less, switch hitters, and natives of the Dominican Republic, Sergio Alcantara. Raymel Flores, and Fernery Ozuna comprise the Hops' middle infield. Both Alcantara and Ozuna have experience in Long-A, while Flores spent last season with the short-season Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League. Flores joined the Diamondbacks in an offseason trade that sent Wade Miley to Boston in exchange for Allen Webster and Rubby de la Rosa.
SWANSON ON THE WAY?: The season ended last night for the Vanderbilt Commodores in the third and final game of the College World Series, as they fell to the Virginia Cavaliers. This means that INF Dansby Swanson is officially open to negotiate with the Diamondbacks, after being selected first overall in the 2015 MLB Draft. Hops fans all over Washington County are crossing their fingers that the star shortstop begins his professional career at Ron Tonkin Field. ON THE AIR:
