Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes presents a five-day tribute to Oregon agriculture during the homestand against the Spokane Indians starting on Friday, June 26.
The tribute will be packed with events and dedications to the people who devote their lives to agriculture, including local industry leaders, family farmers, and food processors. This will be a time to educate the fans about the importance of agriculture in Oregon.
Each night includes an industry or theme to commemorate during the game. Friday's theme involves the nursery industry.
Country singers Lexi Tucker from Silverton and Trevor Tagle from Sweet Home will also be performing at the Volcanoes Stadium to kick off the week of agriculture. They will be performing at 5:30 p.m. at the entertainment stage. The weekly postgame fireworks show will also take place on this Friday.
Saturday, June 27, will revolve around the food processing industry. Groups that will be featured consist of NORPAC, Kerr Concentrates, Willamette Egg Farms, and Fresh n' Local Foods.
Sunday, June 28, is dedicated to traditional family farmers. This night will include a fallen farmer ceremony to honor Scott Miller, the driver of a farm tractor who was rear-ended by another vehicle. Miller was hit near Woodburn in October 2014, so this will be a night to memorialize his life and accomplishments.
This will also be a time to honor and recognize eight impactful women in agriculture. The list includes Shelly Boshart Davis, Marie Bowers, Kathy Hadley, Molly McCargar, Macey Wessels, Amy Doerfler Phelan, Brenda Frketich, and Katy Coba.
Boshart Davis was named 2015 National Farm Mom of the Year. She is a third generation grass seed farmer in Tangent, who is the vice president of Boshart Trucking Inc, BOSSCO Trading LLC, PRESSCO and SJB Farms. She is a current board member on the U.S. Forage Export Council and United Way of Linn County. Boshart Davis is also involved in the PR and Legislative Committees of the Oregon Women for Agriculture, the Agriculture Advisory Board at Santiam Christian High School, and the "Adopt a Farmer" Program.
Bowers is a fifth generation farmer in Harrisburg as she farms at Bashaw Land & Seed. She is a past president of Oregon Women for Agriculture and vice president of the AgChat Foundation. She has worked for Northwest Farm Credit Services and is an advocate for Oregon Agriculture.
Hadley is a lifelong farmer, who manages Freeborn Family Farm in Rickreall and Hadley Family Farm in Silverton. She is a Young Farmers & Ranchers chair on the Oregon Farm Bureau, involved in the Polk County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, a member of the Oregon Ryegrass Growers Association, and a member of the Willamette Valley Oilseed Producers Association.
As a fourth generation farmer in Gervais, McCargar manages Pearmine Farms, Inc. She is the president of Agri-Business Council of Oregon, and she also serves on the Marion County Farm Service Agency Committee, Gervais school district Board of Directors, and on the Campaign Cabinet as the Agri-Business Chair for the United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley. McCargar is involved in the NORPAC, Oregon Cherry Growers & Wilco Cooperatives, as well as the "Farmers Ending Hunger," Marion-Polk Food Share, Salem Harvest, Oregon Food Bank, and the "Adopt a Farmer" program.

She is a past president of the Agri-Business Council of Oregon, involved in the "Adopt a Farmer" program, is a member of the Oregon Women for Agriculture, and is the local advisor for Northwest Farm Credit Services. Doerfler Phelan was the recipient of the 2014 Strategic Economic Development Corporation Agri-Business of the Year award.
Frketich is a third generation farmer in St. Paul, managing Kirsch Family Farms. She is a board member of the Marion County Farm Bureau, Clover Commissioner, and Oregon Young Farmers and Ranchers. She was named one of the America's Best Young Farmers by Progressive Farmer.
Lastly, as a fifth generation wheat ranch farmer from Pendleton, Coba is currently the Oregon Director of Agriculture and has been since 2003. She previously served Oregon as the Governor's Chief Policy Advisor, Economic Development, International Trade Policy Advisor, and Director of Executive Appointments.
Coba said, "I think this promotion says a lot about the importance of agriculture to the Willamette Valley, and it probably says a lot about the Volcanoes' fan base."
Monday, June 29, pays a tribute to the grass seed industry. Additionally, the Future Farmers of America, who are the young leaders in agriculture, will be honored and recognized on this night.
Finally, the tribute wraps up with a theme of farmers ending hunger and the Oregon cattle industry on Tuesday June 30. In order to benefit the Marion-Polk FoodShare, fans are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items.
