Hillsboro Hops News Release
HILLSBORO, OR - Coming off a dramatic ninth inning victory in their home opener, the Hillsboro Hops (4-3) made it easier on themselves tonight. The hometown team jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning, and cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (3-4) at Ron Tonkin Field.
Zach Nehrir, coming off a four-hit home debut yesterday, picked up where he left off with a single to start the game. Dane McFarland walked, and Stephen Dezzi loaded the bases with another hard hit single. Josh Anderson stepped up seeking his first professional walk, and in a scene eerily reminiscent to the night prior, was issued a run to walk in the opening run.
Fernery Ozuna and Gerard Hernandez both followed with towering sacrifice flies to plate McFarland and Dezzi. It was 3-0 Hops, which would turn out to be all the Hops needed, but not all the Hops wanted.
Salem-Keizer responded with a run in the top of the fourth off of Hillsboro starter Jared Miller on a couple of base knocks and a sacrifice fly by left fielder Shilo McCall.
In a spooky twist of fate, Jared Miller, an ex-Vanderbilt Commodore started for the Hops, through to catcher Nate Irving of Virginia Cavalier fame. Vanderbilt and Virginia squared off in a winner-take-all of the final game of the College World Series, with Irving's Cavaliers emerging victorious. The same schools faced each other in last year's College World Series as well, and Nate Irving stroked a double off of Jared Miller. Just a year later, they are teammates in Hillsboro and working together on the very day their alma maters collided with a title on the line. Can't predict baseball.
Back to the game. Hillsboro responded to Salem's run in the bottom of the fourth. Alcantara and Nehrir set the table with back to back singles, and a Dezzi double chased them both home. Anderson followed with his first professional hit, and an Ozuna grounder one batter later brough home Dezzi. Hops led 6-1 after four.
A run apiece in the later innings of the game provided the final margin of 7-2. Of note, Nehrir followed up yesterday's four-hit performance with another today, and is now batting .524 on the season. Stephen Dezzi also posted a 3-4 at the plate, and pitcher Jared Miller threw another fantastic six innings to post his second win of the season.
The series finale is tomorrow night at 7:05 at Ron Tonkin Field as the Hops seek the sweep of the Volcanoes. LHP Cody Reed goes for Hillsboro against RHP Nathanael Santiago of Salem-Keizer. Pregame radio is at 6:35 PM on Rip City Radio 620 AM and at www.ripcityradio.com.
