Saints Snap Four Game Losing Streak, Bounce Back to Win Game Two of Double Header 5-2

GARY, IN (August 5, 2012) - The St. Paul Saints have found a way to beat some of the top pitchers in the American Association. On Sunday afternoon in game two of their double header against the Gary SouthShore Railcats they got to Stephen Hiscock early and won 5-2 at U.S. Steel Yard to earn a split of the double dip.

Hiscock entered the game with the third best ERA in the league at 2.70, but the Saints scored a pair in the first. Adam Frost walked, stole second and later scored on a single by Jose Hernandez to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Miles Durham followed that up with an RBI single that plated Ronnie Bourquin to make it 2-0.

In the second the Saints made it 3-0 when Jake Krause led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by Benji Johnson, and scored on Jim Rapoport's single.

Saints starter Robert Coe, who earned the American Association Pitcher of the month for July, entered the game with a 17.1 scoreless inning streak. He got through the first three innings, but in the fourth the Railcats finally got to him. He gave up a leadoff walk to Ryan Babineau and Tomochika Tsuboi followed that with a single to put runners at first and second. Brian Kolb sacrificed them over and Kenny Bryant singled them both home to cut the Saints lead to 3-2. Coe's scoreless streak ended at 20.2 innings, third longest in Saints history only behind Matt Meyer's (2010) 21.1 innings and Caleb Thielbar's (2011) 29.2 innings. Coe would go 5.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits, but for the second consecutive outing walked seven and struck out four. Coe did receive his 10th win tying him for eighth most in single season history (four players have 12 and three players have 11).

The Saints added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth Frost walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. With two outs Hernandez singled him home to make it 4-2. Hernandez finished the game 3-4 with two RBI and a stolen base.

In the sixth Krause led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Johnson and scored on Rapoport's single giving the Saints a three run cushion. Johnson's second sacrifice of the game was the third of the night for the Saints tying a single game record, now done eight times, the last on August 28, 2011 at Gary. Rapoport finished the game 2-4 with two RBI.

The same two teams meet in the final game of the four game series on Monday night at 7:10 p.m. The Saints are TBA and the Railcats send LHP Jon Gulbransen (2-1, 3.42) to the mound. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KL.
