St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (August 16, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints were hoping the rain coming down on Saturday night would be an omen and help them out when the game continued on Sunday afternoon. It looked like that would be the case as they threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but the Saints pitching couldn't hold up as they lost 14-8 to the Lincoln Saltdogs at Midway Stadium in front of 5,880.

When the game resumed in the bottom of the fifth the Saints had a man at first and nobody out. Jacob Butler roped a double to the gap in right-center to put runners at second and third. Josh Alley's ground out scored Jason Cooper to make it 8-6. The Saints loaded the bases, but Scott Knazek's lined shot was snagged by third baseman Brandon Jones as he leaped in the air to make a great catch. Steve Butler then grounded out to end the inning and the Saints would get no closer.

The Saints looked like they were going to run away and hide jumping all over Saltdogs starter Justin Knoff in the first inning. Alex Fonseca and Anthony Norman started with back-to-back singles. With one out they pulled off a double steal and Jacob Butler walked to load the bases. Josh Alley forced in a run with a bases loaded walk and Brent Krause made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. Jeff Eure made it 4-0 with a two-run single.

In the third Jason Cooper led off with a triple and scored on an RBI ground out from Jacob Butler to make it 5-0.

That's when the Saltdogs started their comeback. In the fourth inning Norm Hutchins, playing in his first game for the Saltdogs, hit a two out solo homer to left, his first of the season. Rafael Alvarez then tripled past a diving Alley in left and scored on an infield single from Shawn McGill to make it 5-2.

The Saltdogs pounded out six runs in the fifth inning and they needed every bit of it because they game was halted in the bottom of the fifth, meaning if the Saltdogs had been trailing the game would have been official and the Saints would have won. Shea McFeely led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single from Brandon Jones. Josh Burrus walked to load the bases. Albenis Machado made it 5-3 with an RBI single and Steve Alexander doubled home two to tie the game. Saints starter Tom Buske left the game and was replaced by Kyle Foster. Hutchins hit a sacrifice fly against him to put the Saltdogs up 6-5. With a man at second and one out the Saints intentionally walked Alvarez, but Foster then walked McGill to load the bases. After a strike out of Gavin Dickey, McFeely roped a two-run double that gave the Saltdogs an 8-5 lead. The rain would come in the bottom of the fifth and halt play.
