El Paso Diablos News Release
El Paso, TX - El Paso jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead but it wouldn't be enough to hold up against Pensacola's powerful offense, as El Paso fell 8-4 at Cohen Stadium on Sunday night. The win completes the Pelicans' sweep of the Diablos, and leaves El Paso eight games back in the division.
El Paso took advantage of a very wild Adam Brandenburg who started the game for Pensacola. He would allow two runs in each of the first two innings by giving up three hits and walking five, before leaving after the second. Bubba Nelson came on and proceeded to shut down the El Paso offense, as El Paso would not register a hit between the second inning and the eighth inning. Meanwhile, Pensacola was chipping away at the Diablos lead, scoring single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to 4-3. They would finally breakthrough in the eighth inning, as the Pelicans scored five runs in the eighth inning to take the lead, and then tacked on three more in the ninth when the Diablos committed three errors. El Paso made it interesting down the stretch, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth and bringing the tying run to the plate.
Justin Mallett pitched seven innings, and allowed only three runs on ten hits, but earned a no decision. Joe Klein (4-6), who had been very strong since his return to El Paso, took the brunt of the five run outburst in the eighth inning and was tagged with the loss. Mike Cervera pitched the final inning, and allowed three unearned runs.
The offense had only eight hits on the night but did work for 11 walks, including three that came with the bases loaded. Kennard Bibbs tied a league record by picking up four walks on the night. Mike Provencher had two hits including a triple, while Bobby Andrews also turned in a two hit night.
El Paso welcomes in Fort Worth on Monday night with first pitch slated for 7:05. Clegg Snipes (1-1, 4.30) will start for El Paso against the Cat's Lee Gwaltney (5-1, 3.14). It is Mission Monday with part of the proceeds going to a local charity. Fans can follow along by listening online at www.diablos.com .
