Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FORT WORTH, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Fort Worth Cats 2-1 at LaGrave Field on Sunday evening.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the ninth, Dustan Mohr singled home Greg Porter to tie the game and then scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to give Wichita the lead.
The Cats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-out, RBI single from Patrick O'Sullivan. It would prove to be the only run and only Cats' hit of the game until the ninth inning.
Gabe Medina was brilliant for seven innings, allowing one run on just one base hit in a no-decision. Medina struck out eight and retired the final 13 batters to face him.
Wichita was shutout by Cats' starter Jae Hun Jung, who worked seven scoreless innings before giving way to Gary Lee in the eighth who did not allow a run.
After Joe D'Alessandro pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth to keep Wichita within one run, Greg Porter doubled off the glove of left fielder Kevin Thompson. Dustan Mohr came up next and singled into short center field, with Porter beating center fielder Brian Fryer's throw to tie the game. An error and a fielder's choice advanced Mohr to third before Scott Vander Weg unloaded a wild pitch that bounced up the third base line and allowed Mohr to score the go-ahead run.
Doug Hurn took over in the bottom of the ninth and worked around a lead off single, and finished the game by striking out Michael Bell, who homered off of Hurn in the ninth inning on Saturday night, with the tying run on third.
It makred the first time this season that the Wingnuts won a game when trailing after eight innings. The Wingnuts conclude their 16-game road trip with a winning record of 9-7 and move back to .500 in the second half at 18-18.
The Wingnuts now return home for the first time since July 29th, opening a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers on Tuesday, August 18th at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Adam Cowart is expected to make the start. For tickets and more information, contact the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-4625.
