St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (August 16, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints hoped to make a move in the division race against the Lincoln Saltdogs during their three game series. They did. Unfortunately, it was in the wrong direction as they lost 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium in front of 5,430 and were swept in the series pushing them 4.0 games out of first with 13 games left in the season.

The Saints had no answer against Saltdogs starter Tim Brown, who baffled them for the first 6.0 innings of the ballgame. It wasn't until the seventh they were able to break through against him, but Brown went 6.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two.

The Saltdogs started it off in the first when Josh Burrus led off with a double off the center field wall. He moved to third when Albenis Machado reached on a throwing error by second baseman Alex Fonseca and scored on the sacrifice fly from Phil Hawke to make it 1-0.

In the third the Saltdogs made it 4-0 when Hawke doubled with one out. Norm Hutchins and Rafael Alvarez followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases. With two outs Gavin Dickey singled home two and Shea McFeely's infield single scored the final run of the inning.

In the fourth Machado was hit by a pitch with one out and with two outs he moved to second on Hutchins' single to right. Alvarez followed with a two-run double to make it 6-0.

The Saints scored their two runs in the seventh when Jacob Butler led off with a single and Josh Alley followed with a two-run homer to right, his second of the season. The Saints added a single from Brent Krause and Jeff Eure, but closer Chris Thompson relieved Brown and struck out the next three hitters to earn his 28th save of the season.

The Saints have Monday off and will take on the Sioux Falls Canaries in game one of a three game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints are TBA and the Canaries will send RHP Pat Mahomes (2-7, 5.79) to the mound. One lucky fan will win $1,000 to be used on the next day at Denny Hecker's Property Auction. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
