St. Paul Saints News Release
JOPLIN, MO - The Saints were five outs away from taking the first three games of the series against the Joplin Blasters, but they could not hang on as they lost 4-3 in game one of the doubleheader at Joe Becker Stadium.
With the Saints leading 3-1 in the sixth Aaron Brill led off with a single against Saints starter Cody Scarpetta. Jake Taylor walked and Cory Morales made it 3-2 with an RBI single. Scarpetta was removed in place of reliever Cody Wheeler. Juan Medina hit a ground ball to short that looked like a potential double play. Tanner Vavra's throw to second got the lead runner, but Sam Maus' throw to first was in the dirt, glanced off the glove of Angelo Songco and skipped away from him allowing the tying run to score.
In the seventh Zach Burling led off with a single to center and was sacrificed to second. Geraldo Valentin was intentionally walked and Willie Cabrera drew a walk to load the bases. With the middle of the infield halfway Brill smoked a single over the glove of Vavra at short that scored the winning run.
The Saints jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first when Alonzo Harris reached on an infield single, stole second and scored on Breland Almadova's single.
In the third the Saints made it 2-0, but it could have been more. They loaded the bases with nobody out on a walk to Maxx Garrett, a single by Harris and a bunt single by Almadova. Nate Hanson grounded into a double play that scored a run and Angelo Songco grounded out to end the inning.
With the Saints leading 2-1 in the sixth Tony Thomas provided the Saints a two run cushion with a solo homer to left, his fourth of the season extending his hitting streak to 13, giving the Saints a 3-1 lead.
