Sioux Falls Canaries Try to Tag out the Winnipeg Goldeyes

WINNIPEG, MB - The Sioux Falls Canaries returned to Shaw Park on Wednesday night with RHP Madison Boer looking for his first win in a Canaries uniform. Boer put together his best start of the season, but the Birds' offense stalled, dropping the third game of the series by the final score of 3-2.
Boer (0-2, 7.46 ERA) was just one batter over the minimum before giving up a lead-off single to Miakol Gonzalez in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Goldeyes tied the game at 1-1 on the next at-bat when Josh Romanski laced an RBI double down the leftfield line.
Winnipeg took their first, and only lead of the night in the fourth inning with Romanski and Jacob Rogers scoring on back-to-back throwing errors from Canaries catcher Nolan Johnson and outfielder Ozney Guillen. Johnson attempted to throw out Rogers at first base, with his throw getting away from first baseman David Bergin, rolling out into right field. Guillen picked up the errant throw and air-mailed it into the camera well near the third base dugout. The two-base throwing error allowed both runs to score, giving the Goldeyes a 3-1 lead.
Johnson led off the top of the 5th inning with a single to center, but the Birds' were unable to bring him home after Frank Martinez flew out to center and Ozney Guillen grounded into the inning ending 6-4-3 double play. The Canaries had another threat going in the top of the sixth after Blake Schmit and Ethan Chapman reached base on back-to-back base hits before David Bergin grounded into another inning ending double play.
The Birds finally broke through with their second run of the night in the top of the seventh inning after Jerome Pena singled to left field and later scored on Guillen's RBI single, putting the potential tying run on base. The threat was once again short lived, with Cameron Monger striking out to end the inning.
The Canaries final threat of the night came in the top of the eighth with Schmit and Chapman again hitting back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, but Taylor Zeutenhorst struck out looking to end the threat, and the inning.
Goldeyes closer Jailen Peguero made quick work of the Canaries offense in the top of the 9th inning, setting the Birds down 1-2-3 to pick up his third save of the season.
Canaries second baseman Frank Martinez extended his hitting streak (4 games) after hitting a lead-off home run in the top of the 4th inning. Martinez finished the night 1-for-4 at the plate and has hit safely in each of the first three games in the series. Chapman and Schmit led the offensive attack for Sioux Falls, each going 2-for-4 in the loss.
The four-game series wraps up on Thursday morning with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 AM. Canaries LHP Joe Bircher (0-1, 2.76 ERA) makes his third start of the season against Goldeyes RHP Edwin Carl (1-1, 7.44 ERA).
