Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (8-5) beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 3-2 at Shaw Park on Wednesday night.

Duke von Schamann (1-1) allowed two earned runs on seven hits in six and one-third innings to pick up his first win of the year. von Schamann walked one and struck out three.

"We needed this one after last night's outing," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney . "We just got good pitching today from our starter and bullpen. Our defence was really good and turned two big double plays for us. We were just clean enough on the mound and on the defensive side to win the ballgame."

With the Goldeyes leading in the top of the sixth inning, back-to-back one-out singles from Blake Schmit and Ethan Chapman allowed the Canaries (6-7) to put the tying runs on first and third. von Schamann bounced back and induced an inning-ending double play ball off the bat of David Bergin.

"He (von Schamann) was really good today," said Forney. "It was a good bounce-back effort for Duke. He gave us a big start when we really needed one. I thought he was fantastic under the (cold and wet) circumstances."

"I felt good," said von Schamann. "Anytime we get a win, I'm going to feel good about my performance. I was just trying to pound the zone and keep the ball low. Slider and changeup felt good tonight."

In the seventh, one-out singles from Jerome Pena and Nolan Johnson put the tying runs aboard for a second straight inning. Eric Eadington relieved von Schamann and recorded the second out when Frank Martinez hit into a fielder's choice. Ozney Guillen pulled the Canaries within 3-2 with a line drive single to left. Brandon Shimo then took over for Eadington. After Guillen stole second to put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Shimo threw six consecutive off-speed pitches to Cameron Monger, culminating in a called third strike that ended the threat.

Cameron McVey protected the 3-2 lead with a scoreless eighth. Schmit led off with a single, but was thrown out by Carlton Tanabe trying to steal second. Chapman reached on an infield hit, and advanced to second as the tying run when Bergin grounded out to shortstop. McVey froze Taylor Zeutenhorst with a called third strike to keep Winnipeg in front.

Jailen Peguero closed the door in the ninth with a perfect inning that included back-to-back strikeouts of Johnson and Martinez to end the game. Peguero notched his third save of the year, and was pitching on a fourth consecutive day.

Martinez opened the scoring with a solo home run to right field off of von Schamann leading off the top of the third.

The Goldeyes took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Maikol Gonzalez legged out an infield single on a grounder to shortstop, and scored one pitch later when Josh Romanski doubled down the left field line. After Jacob Rogers walked two batters later, an errant throw by Johnson behind the plate allowed Romanski and Rogers to move up an extra base. Both runners came home when Guillen's return throw from right field bounced into the photographer's area next to the Goldeyes' dugout.

"Maikol was great tonight," said von Schamann. "Sometimes you don't notice how hard the plays are he's making, because he makes them look pretty easy, especially on those double plays. I mean, on one of them, he had to go way in the hold and throw it basically while he's facing our bullpen. He's stellar, and I'm happy to have him behind me."

Madison Boer (0-2) took the loss for Sioux Falls, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits in seven innings.

The series finale is scheduled for Thursday morning at 11:05 a.m. Edwin Carl (1-1, 7.45) faces left-hander Joe Bircher (0-1, 2.77).
