Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts tied their season-high with 14 runs and posted a season-high 19 hits Thursday night as they earned a series-splitting 14-5 victory over the Laredo Lemurs at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

After Laredo (8-6) scored two in the first to grab the first runs of the night, Wichita (5-9) took control in the second. Three of the first four to the plate singled in the frame, with Christian Stringer collecting an RBI for his knock. That brought up Zack Cox who hit a line drive three-run homer to left field off of Troy Marks (0-2) to give the Wingnuts a 4-2 lead.

The home team was at it again in the fourth. T.J. Mittelstaedt was already 2-for-2 when he blasted a three-run shot of his own off of Marks to stretch the lead to five.

In the fifth, it was Leo Vargas who got the job done, plating two more with a single, one of his career-high four hits on the evening.

After single runs in the sixth and seventh drew Laredo within five at 9-4, Wichita put a cap on their offensive explosion in the seventh. Harrison Kain brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, and with two outs and the bases empty, the Wingnuts began another onslaught.

The next five to the plate all collected hits, with Cox, Brent Clevlen, and Mittelstaedt all scoring runs with doubles. Cox drove in a pair with his two-bagger, giving him five for the night, the most by a Wingnut in a game this season.

All that offense was plenty for Charlie Leesman (1-1), who turned in his best start as a Wingnut. The lefty gave up three runs on four hits over six innings, earning a quality start and his first win with Wichita. After giving up a pair in the first, he retired nine a row, and only allowed a pair of hits after the opening frame.

The Wingnuts continue their seven-game homestand on Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium as the Gary SouthShore RailCats come to town to begin a three-game series. Wichita will send veteran righty Jon Link (1-2, 7.97) to the mound, while the RailCats will counter with fellow right-hander Travis McGee (0-3, 10.28). First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
