Saints Go Back-To-Back-To-Back to Win Game Two of Doubleheader 5-3

JOPLIN, MO - The St. Paul Saints veterans apparently weren't too please about blowing the lead in the first game of the doubleheader. Nate Hanson, Angelo Songco and Tony Thomas became the third trio in Saints history to go back-to-back-to-back as the Saints defeated the Joplin Blasters 5-3 in game two of the doubleheader at Joe Becker Stadium.

In the first inning the trio accomplished the feat to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. It was the fourth time in Saints history that a trio has done that, the last time was June 26, 2013 at Midway Stadium when Brad Boyer, Willie Cabrera and Brandon Tripp did it. The only other trio to do it accomplished it twice in a 13 day span. Darryl Strawberry, Marty Neff and Kevin Garner did it on June 2, 1996 at Duluth-Superior and then again on June 15 at Sioux Falls. The home run by Thomas extended his hitting streak to 14, one shy of his career best.

Sam Maus tacked on an insurance run in the fourth when Willie Argo singled, was sacrificed to second by Brady Burzynski and scored on Maus' single to give the Saints a 4-0 lead.

That looked like it was going to be enough for Alec Crawford who allowed just one hit through four innings. In the fifth, however, with one out Cory Morales struck out, but reached on a dropped third strike. Jake Taylor walked and Crawford got Will Soto to line out to left. Zach Burling, however, would crush a three-run homer to left, his first of the season, to make it 4-3. Crawford went 5.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three and picked up the win.

Maus gave the Saints a little breathing room in the sixth when Angelo Songco led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs and runners at first and second Maus doubled off the bag at third scoring Songco to put the Saints up two. Maus finished the game 2-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Saints bullpen was solid in two innings of relief with Chris Peacock pitching a perfect sixth and striking out all three hitters and Ryan Rodebaugh earning his fifth save of the season with a perfect seventh while striking out two.

The Saints now travel 779 miles to Uni Trade Stadium to take on the Laredo Lemurs in game one of a three game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (3-0, 1.90) to the mound against Lemurs RHP Ryan Beckman (1-1, 2.11). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
