April 11, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
WATERLOO, IA-Brock Boeser had a goal and an assist to lead the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 4-1 victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday night at the Young Arena. The loss, combined with a Cedar Rapids win over Chicago, moved Dubuque to a 3rd Place finish in the Eastern Conference. The Fighting Saints will host Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal series with Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, April 14 to open the playoffs.
While it was Dubuque that had a lot on the line, it was Waterloo that entered Saturday's game with urgency. The Black Hawks scored two goals in the game's first 27 seconds. First it was John Wiitala, deflecting a Brock Boeser wrist shot under Jacob Nehama's left arm to make it 1-0 Waterloo just 12 seconds into the game. Only 25 seconds later, Boeser scored on a rebound to give Waterloo a 2-0 lead.
Dubuque would respond late in the first period on a power play goal from Brett Boeing. Wyatt Ege skated the puck into the offensive zone and fed the puck across to Boeing on the left wing. He one-timed a shot up and over an outstretched Cale Morris to make it 2-1 Waterloo with just 13.8 seconds left in the first period.
Dubuque looked to turn the momentum in period two, and Nehama came up with a giant stop on Boeser on a penalty shot midway through the frame. However, it would be the Black Hawks that would add to their lead. Bryan Lemos scored with nine minutes left in the second period, wrapping the puck behind the net and sliding a shot five-hole on Nehama to make it 3-1 Waterloo.
The Black Hawks would score the lone goal of the third period with Max Coatta notching an empty net goal at 17:44. Dubuque pulled Nehama with a power play in the game's final minutes, but Coatta scored after Hayden Shaw fanned on a shot at the point.
Waterloo outshot Dubuque 30-27 on the evening. The Fighting Saints ended the regular season with a record of 46-19-5.
Dubuque finished 3rd in the USHL's Eastern Conference, locking in a matchup with 2nd-seeded Cedar Rapids, making them the lower seed in the Eastern Conference Semifinal, which is a best-of-five series. Fans who have already picked up their playoff tickets are asked to use the ticket for GAME A at Tuesday's Game 1 on April 14, and the ticket for GAME B for Game 4 on Monday, April 20.
