Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Fargo, ND-With 11 regular players out of the lineup resting for the playoffs, the Fargo Force scored empty net goals late to pull away from the Stampede 6-1 Saturday night at Scheels Arena in the final regular season game for both teams. Lukas Buchta tallied the only goal for the Herd while Art Brey stopped 28 of 31 shots in goal as the Stampede finished the regular season with a 32-23-5 record and a 6-2-0 record against the Force who finish the season with a 26-28-6 record. Sioux Falls opens the playoffs Tuesday at home versus Sioux City.
After a scoreless first period, the Stampede got the first goal of the game when Lukas Buchta tallied his eighth goal of the season. Off a face-off draw affiliate player Max Johnson sent a perfect pass to the left point to Buchta who blasted a shot past Fargo goaltender Mathias Israelsson to give Sioux Falls a 1-0 lead 2:48 into the game. Five minutes later the Force would tie the game when Denis Smirnov knocked home a loose rebound in front of the Stampede net to tie the game 1-1. It stayed that way until the 17:03 mark when Mason Morelli redirected a shot from the left point past Stampede goaltender Art Brey to give the Force a 2-1 edge. Fargo would take that lead into the locker room, outshooting the Herd 16-13 through two periods.
Fargo extended their lead just 2:06 into the third period when TJ Roo connected off a pass from Zach Yon to make it a 3-1 game. It stayed that way until the final minutes of the game at which point the Stampede pulled Art Brey for an extra attacker, but Jack Jenkins gave the Force a 4-1 advantage. The Herd would then go on a 5-on-3 advantage sending Brey to the bench to give the Herd a 6-on-3, but a clearing attempt from Micahel Babcock deep in the Fargo zone found its way all way into an empty net. The Force added one more empty net goal at 19:40 from Mason Morelli and skated away with a 6-1 victory over the Herd. Fargo outshot the 34-21 and went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Herd were 0-for-2.
