Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (24-25-11) got two goals from Charlie Gerard and 35 saves from Garrett Metcalf in a 4-1 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks (35-21-4) at the Alliant Energy Center in the Capitols' season finale.
For a second straight night, Madison got out of the gates with a shooting gallery, as they outshot the Lumberjacks by a 16-6 margin in the first period against 16-year-old goaltender Michael Latorella. Unlike Friday, though, Madison was able to crack the scoreboard.
At 6:02 of the period, Mitch Hults laid the puck into the slot area, where Luke McElhenie backhanded a rolling disc behind Latorella to give Madison the 1-0 edge.
At the other end, Garrett Metcalf may have only seen six shots, but he was sharp, coming up with a save from point-blank range on David Keefer to preserve the Madison lead at the first intermission break.
The Capitols parlayed their strong first period into an equally strong second period, as Charlie Gerard continued to light up the scoreboard. First, he took a pass from Haralds Egle in the slot and backhanded it through Latorella to put Madison up, 2-0, at 7:50.
The younger Gerard was nowhere near done with his night, though, as at 11:16, Guillaume Leclerc hit his winger with a home run pass, and Gerard busted down the right wing side to beat Latorella with a quick wrist shot to up the Madison lead to 3-0.
Muskegon would not quietly, and they used a controversial set of circumstances to get on the board. With just under six minutes to play in the period, Matheson Iacopelli broke in alone on Metcalf, who made a spectacular sprawling left pad save. Griffen Molino quickly followed up on the rebound to shovel it into the goal. The net had already come off the moorings behind Metcalf, but after consultation, the officials deemed it a good goal, Molino's 18th of the season and second in as many nights.
Capitols head coach Luke Strand quickly called his timeout after the call to settle his troops down, and Madison was strong, finishing out the second period without taking any penalties and without allowing Muskegon to get closer than the 3-1 score.
Madison would send their home fans out for the 2014-15 season in style, as Robby Fosdick picked up his first goal in the USHL to round out the scoring in the final period. At 9:28, after he was denied by Latorella on a quick pass to the front of the net from Hunter Luhmann, Fosdick stuck with it, and Luhmann found him on the second effort to make it 4-1.
Madison got fantastic goaltending from Metcalf all night, and the goalie came up with a trio of splendid saves in the game's final seconds to cap the season with a bow and ribbon. It was the Salt Lake City native's 10th win of the season. The Capitols finished the year with exactly half of its wins at home, going 12-13-5 at the Alliant Energy Center.
