Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-23) gave up three home runs in losing 8-3 to the St. Paul Saints (20-18) on Thursday night at Midway Stadium.

St. Paul blasted their way to an early lead over the Canaries. Brent Krause took Noel Baca deep for a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Saints ahead, 2-0. In the third inning, Jason Cooper launched a ball over the wall in right field for a solo homer to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. The homers for Krause and Cooper were the tenth of the season for each man.

The Canaries got their first run in the fifth inning. Trevor Lawhorn doubled to start the fifth, his 27th double of the 2009 season. With two outs, Ken Lup singled to score Lawhorn and put the Birds on the scoreboard, 3-1.

The Saints got their third home run of the game in the sixth inning. Jacob Butler hit his 16th home run of the season to give St. Paul a 4-1 lead. The next four runs also went to the Saints, as St. Paul built an 8-1 lead going into the ninth inning.

In the ninth inning, the Canaries showed a flicker of life. Cody Haerther started the inning with a single and Beau Torbert followed with a two-run homer. Beau's eighth home run of the season made it 8-3, but that was all the scoring the Birds would get in losing the game by five runs.

Noel Baca (3-5) gave up five runs on nine hits in six innings of work to suffer his second consecutive loss. Tom Buske (4-5) broke a three-start losing streak, in allowing just one run on six hits in seven innings of work.

The Canaries return home to host the Wichita Wingnuts on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The game will feature "Post-Game Fireworks" presented
