Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - In the series opener on Monday, new addition Richard Salazar completely shut down the Pensacola Pelicans offense. On Wednesday, looking for the sweep, fellow newcomer Drew Coffey did not have the same luck. Starting with a four-pitch walk to leadoff man Francisco Leandro, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains' new lefty fell behind early and the Captains never could dig out of a hole, falling 10-2 in front of 855 at Fair Grounds Field.
Kevin Reynolds moved Leandro to second with a drag bunt single, before a double steal and a strikeout put runners at second and third and one out. Chase Burch got the Pelicans (48-38, 24-14 2nd half) on the board first with a groundout to short, before Reynolds stole third and scored on a throw by catcher Kevin Griffin that deflected off the hitter's bat and sailed into the outfield.
The Captains (42-44, 20-18) then made three errors in the second to give Pensacola another run, and the Pelicans ended Coffey's night with three more runs in the third inning. Derrick Miramontes put up two zeroes in the fourth and fifth, but Shreveport-Bossier never got anything going against starter Aaron Jackson (2-3).
The righty got the first eight hitters out in a row before Angelo Fermin doubled down the leftfield line with two outs in the third. Bryan Sabatella grounded out on the next pitch, and the Captains did not have two on in an inning until the sixth. With runners at first and third and one out, Jackson struck out Christopher Garcia and got Andres Rodriguez on a hard liner to left to end the inning.
Jackson went eight, giving up seven hits and his only runs on Garcia's two-sun single in the eighth, with a walk and four strikeouts.
By the time the Captains finally got on the board, though, it was far too little and far too late, as the Pelicans had broken it open with four in the sixth, getting three on McDougall's bases-clearing double.
Notes: The Captains dropped four games behind Pensacola with 10 to play, and one game behind Grand Prairie for second...Dwayne White was the only Captain with more than one hit...Jason Herman made his Shreveport-Bossier debut with two scoreless innings to finish things up...The Captains finished 10-6 at home this season against the Pelicans, the most games the Captains played in any one place against any one team this season.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains have Thursday off before heading to Fort Worth for a three-game series with the Cats, starting on Friday, August 21 at 7:05 p.m. The Captains are back home for their final regular-season series on Monday, August 24, with three games against the El Paso Diablos.
