Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts signed catcher John Martin on Thursday afternoon.
Martin has three seasons of professional experience, most recently with the Kansas City T-Bones in 2008. Martin hit .257 for Kansas City last year, with three home runs and 27 RBIs in 55 games. Martin was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 24th round in 2006 after finishing at Emporia State University. Martin spent the next two seasons in the Dodgers organization.
The Overland Park, KS native is currently the pitching coach for Emporia State and coached Wingnuts' players Michael Sharp and Diego Soto this past season when the Hornets reached the Division-II National Championship game.
Martin's signing comes after Sharp suffered a season-ending thumb injury in Wednesday's game versus Sioux City. The rookie catcher was hitting .333 over his first 14 professional games, including an RBI single before his injury last night. Sharp has been placed on the Inactive List.
Wingnuts' starting catcher Joe Muich, who suffered a head injury in a collision at home plate on Tuesday night, remains day-to-day.
The Wingnuts play the rubber game of a three-game series tonight against Sioux City. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-4625.
