Saints Blank Goldeyes on Chilly Evening

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 4-0 to the St. Paul Saints at Shaw Park on Monday night.

The Saints took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Nathaniel Maggio led off with a single down the right field line. After Trevor Sealey reached on an error, Joey Wong sacrificed the runners to second and third. Max Murphy drove a triple to right-centre that scored Maggio and Sealey. Two batters later, Brady Shoemaker beat out an infield single in the hole at shortstop that brought home Murphy.

Sealey opened the top of the seventh with a single to left-centre, took second on another sacrifice from Wong, and scored the Saints' fourth run on a two-out, RBI single to centre from Dan Motl.

Saints' starter Jake Matthys (9-7) picked up the win, allowing four hits over seven and two-thirds shutout innings. Matthys walked three and struck out three.

Brennan Bernardino (1-3) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits in seven innings. Bernardino walked none and struck out three.

Brandon Bingel and Edwin Carl each worked one scoreless inning in relief of Bernardino.

The two-game series concludes Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Mitchell Lambson (8-5, 3.75) faces right-hander Trevor Foss (4-2, 2.98).
