Cleburne Railroaders News Release
SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota - Angelo Gumbs had Cleburne's second four-hit night of the year, but the Railroaders gave up a pair of solo homers in a 2-1 loss to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium on Monday night.
Gumbs went 4-for-4 with a double and the lone Cleburne run scored, but the other eight Railroaders combined for just four hits and lost for the 32nd time in 43 road games this year.
Railroaders starter James Williams - making his first start of 2018 - went six innings and gave up just one run on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts, but Will Mathis gave up a two-out solo homer to Jeff Malm in the 8th inning that gave Sioux Falls a lead for good.
Cleburne opened the scoring with Levi Scott's two-out RBI double that scored Angelo Gumbs in the 1st inning. Scott came up after Patrick Palmeiro reached on Malm's first error of the year that allowed the inning to continue.
The Canaries answered on Jordan Smith's leadoff homer in the 6th after Sioux Falls stranded two runners in each of the previous four innings. Cleburne loaded the bases with three consecutive singles in the top of the 6th but couldn't extend the lead.
Sioux Falls starter Dylan Thompson went seven innings and gave up just the one unearned run, and after Ryan Fritze surrendered a leadoff single in the 8th, Fritze and closer Kyle Schepel combined to go six-up, six-down with five strikeouts.
The Railroaders and Canaries wrap up the brief two-game series with the finale at the Birdcage on Tuesday night. Cleburne will send RHP Jesus Sanchez to the mound for his second start of 2018, and the Canaries have yet to announce a starting pitcher.
The Railroaders return home for the final series of 2018 on Saturday, September 1 against the Texas AirHogs. Cleburne has just two home games remaining - Sept. 1 and Sept. 3 - and all ticket/promotional information can be found at www.railroaderbaseball.com or by calling (817) 945-8705.
