St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 12, 2009) - With just 17 games left in the season the St. Paul Saints are now tied for first place after a 9-1 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries on Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. Coupled with the Lincoln Saltdogs loss to the Wichita Wingnuts, the Saints are tied with the Saltdogs atop the North Division.
The Saints jumped on top in the first inning as Alex Fonseca led off with a walk and moved to second on a single from Josh Alley. Brent Krause loaded the bases with a single. A Ryan Ford wild pitch scored Fonseca to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. After a walk to Jason Cooper loaded the bases again, Jacob Butler's double play ground out scored Alley to make it 2-0. Jeff Eure finished off the scoring with an RBI triple and Eure's night was just getting started.
The Saints took a 4-0 lead in the fourth as Fonseca singled to left with two outs that scored Andrew Schmiesing.
Saints starter Charlie did the rest dominating the Canaries through 7.0 innings of work. The only inning he gave up a run came in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Ruud hit Beau Torbert. With two outs Trevor Lawhorn singled to left, moving Torbert to second. Patrick Reilly then hit a slow grounder to short which Steve Butler fielded and his throw to first went wide of Cooper which allowed Torbert to score from second. It was an unearned run and Ruud allowed just the unearned run on six hits while walking two and picking up his seventh win of the season.
The Saints continued to pound the Canaries in the sixth when Fonseca led off with a triple. He went 3-4 with a single, triple, RBI and two runs scored. Alley knocked him in with an RBI single to make it 5-1. After Brent Krause's fielder's choice retired Alley, Cooper and Jacob Butler followed with back-to-back singles, the latter scoring Krause to make it 6-1.
Eure finished off his great night in the ninth when Cooper and Jacob Butler walked with two outs. Eure deposited one over the left field wall, his third of the season, to finish off the Saints scoring. Eure finished the night 3-5, falling a double shy of the cycle, with four RBI and a run scored.
The Saints will go for the three game sweep of the Canaries on Thursday night at Sioux Falls Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Mark Moriarty (2-4, 5.32) against Canaries RHP Pat Mahomes (1-7, 6.53). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
