Riddle, Cats blank Captains 3-0

SHREVEPORT - Ryan Riddle worked six shutout innings and combined with three Cats relievers on a five-hit shutout as the Cats downed Shreveport-Bossier 3-0 on Wednesday night at Fair Grounds Field.

With the win, the Cats took 2-of-3 from the Captains in the series and went 3-3 on the six-game road trip.

The Cats broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning as John Allen singled with one out and advanced to third on two passed balls. After Michael Bell walked, Ryan Patterson grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Allen for a 1-0 Fort Worth lead.

They added two runs to their lead in the eighth when Allen led off with a double and came in to score on an RBI single by Bell. Bell advanced to second on the throw, went to third on a fly to center by Ryan Patterson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelley Gulledge.

Riddle (5-6) went six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and tying his season-high with seven strikeouts. Gary Lee, Ryan Trytten and Scott Vander Weg each contributed a scoreless inning out of the Cats' bullpen with Vander Weg notching his fourth save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

It is the sixth shutout of the season for the Cats' pitching staff, but their first since June 17.

Jimmy Heard allowed an unearned run on six hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work. It was his first loss of the season.

After starting the game 0-for-4, Brian Fryer singled in his fifth at bat in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to 25 games.

The Cats have the day off Thursday before returning to LaGrave Field for a three-game series against Wichita beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Nat Harris will pitch for Fort Worth in the series opener.
