Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - Five days ago, Fort Worth Cats righty Lee Gwaltney bested Shreveport-Bossier Captains righty Thad Markray at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, Texas. But Tuesday night at Fair Grounds Field, the veteran Captains righty flipped the script, tossing six shutout innings and getting offensive help throughout his lineup - especially from his catcher, Tommy Bryant, who had four hits - leading the Captains to an easy 9-1 win over the Cats in front of 1,401 fans at Fair Grounds Field.
The win was Markray's first since he beat St. Paul on June 10, and came in his second start back from an arm injury. Markray (4-8) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out five, never letting a runner get to third base. He had two innings where he had two men on, but got Cameron Blair to pop out in the third and fly out in the fifth to end those innings.
Shreveport-Bossier (39-40, 16-14 2nd half) scored single runs in each of the first two innings against Gwaltney (5-1), making his second start back with the Cats (45-34, 15-16) since returning from Mexico. The righty's wildness hurt him in the first, walking Bryan Sabatella and Richard Paz on five pitches each to start his outing. Christopher Garcia then hit a bouncer to second, but Isa Garcia misplayed it for an error that allowed Sabatella to score from second.
In the second, another leadoff walk - this time to Dwayne White - came back to bite Gwaltney. After Bryant's first hit of the night and a sacrifice bunt by Angelo Fermin, Sabatella lofted a sacrifice fly to right to give the Captains a 2-0 lead. The third-inning run came courtesy of a two-out solo home run by Jose Torres, his fifth of the season, before Gwaltney settled down through the next two innings. But in the sixth, Bryant led off with his third hit, before Angelo Fermin dragged a bunt single to the right side. First baseman Patrick O'Sullivan's throw to try to get Fermin got by second baseman Isa Garcia to allow the runners to move up.
Sabatella then punched a two-run single over the drawn-in infield, before two more errors led to Sabatella scoring the Captains' final run of the inning, which also featured a 5-2 double play turned by the Cats.
Shreveport-Bossier got three more in the seventh against Matt Gibbs, who relieved Gwaltney after Sabatella's hit in the sixth, and Taylor Parker, with an RBI single for Sabatella to give him four RBIs on the night and a two-run double to right-center by Paz.
Robert Romero pitched a scoreless seventh for the Captains, Derrick Miramontes allowed only an unearned run in the eighth, and Justin Dowdy pitched a shutout ninth to finish things up. With the win, the Captains moved to within two games of Pensacola in the 2nd half South Division race, after the Pelicans lost to Grand Prairie 12-10.
