Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-19) suffered their third consecutive defeat, falling 9-1 against the St. Paul Saints (18-13) on Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Saints jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the first inning. The bases were loaded on a walk to Alex Fonseca and consecutive singles off the bats of Josh Alley and Brent Krause. Fonseca scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game, 1-0 Saints. After Jason Cooper walked to re-load the bases, Jacob Butler grounded into a double play. Josh Alley scored on the play to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. With Krause at third and two outs, Jeff Eure tripled past a diving Cody Haerther in left field to bring in Krause, and after a half inning the Saints held a 3-0 advantage.

St. Paul added a run in the fourth. With runners on the corners and two outs, Fonseca singled to score Andrew Schmiesing. The additional run gave the Saints a four-run lead over the Canaries, 4-0.

The Canaries got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. With two men on base, Patrick Reilly hit a groundball toward the shortstop for an infield single. In trying to make the play, Saints shortstop Steve Butler threw the ball past the bag at first, and the error allowed Beau Torbert to score, for the Canaries lone run, making it 4-1.

St. Paul added six more runs, three in the seventh inning, and three on Jeff Eure's third home run of the season in the ninth inning, as the Saints went on to win 9-1.

Ryan Ford (3-9) gave up six runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings to suffer the loss, and become the tenth pitcher in Canaries history and second this year to lose nine games in a single season. Charlie Ruud (7-3) pitched seven innings allowing one unearned run on six hits and two walks to get his third win in four starts.

The Sioux Falls Canaries will look to avoid the sweep against the Saints on Thursday night, as the Birds will present a "Used Car Giveaway" to a randomly drawn fan following the game.
