Wingnuts Roll Over Lincoln

LINCOLN, NE- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 9-1 at Haymarket Park on Wednesday night. Richard Salazar fired five shutout innings in his first start since May 26th kept Lincoln's offense at bay, while Wichita scored four in the first and five in the eighth to support the left-hander.

For the second straight game, Greg Porter drove in the first run of the game, this time an RBI single to left after back-to-back hits from Josh Horn and Patrick Brooks. Later in the inning, Kelly Hunt hit a ground rule double over the left field wall to make it 2-0. With second and third and two down, Steve Pearson hit a groundball to shortstop that was misplayed by Albenis Machado and then thrown into the stands allowing two more runs to score.

Starting in place of Adam Cowart, Salazar allowed just one base hit, striking out five and walking three to earn his third win of the season. Salazar struck out the side in the bottom of the third.

Leading 4-1 in the eighth, six consecutive Wingnuts collected base hits, including a two-run home run from Kelly Hunt, his league leading 18th of the year. With 16 games left in the season, Hunt is four shy of tying the single-season league mark of 22 set in 2008. Michael Thompson and Brenan Herrera also had run scoring hits in the inning, while Josh Horn drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Right-hander Ryan Ashner made his Wingnuts debut, allowing one run in two innings in the win. Joe D'Alessandro worked a perfect eighth, while Doug Hurn, pitching on his 24th birthday, retired the side in the ninth to finish the win.

The Wingnuts wrap up their series against Lincoln tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Right-handers Will Savage and Jim Paduch take the mound.
