Sacramento Sacks Isotopes 16-5 in Series Opener

The Sacramento River Cats (27-14) scored early and often, defeating the Albuquerque Isotopes (24-17) 16-5 on Thursday night at Isotopes Park. After winning 10 of their first 13 games in May, the 'Topes have now dropped three consecutive contests, tying their longest such streak of the season.

Sacramento jumped to a daunting 11-run lead through the first three innings courtesy of a two-run homer and three-run shot from Chris Carter, before the Isotopes found the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Albuquerque native Brian Cavazos-Galvez had an impressive homecoming in his professional Isotopes Park debut, collecting the first of his two hits with a leadoff double to left-center. Tyler Henson followed with a triple to center field, plating Cavazos-Galvez and making the score 11-1, River Cats. Henson then scored himself, dashing home on a wild pitch to narrow the deficit to 11-2.

The River Cats didn't let off the gas, adding one run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Albuquerque attempted to make the game respectable beginning in the fourth inning with a triple to right from Luis Cruz who later scored on a groundout from Tim Federowicz. Cavazos-Galvez punched a single to left field to start the fifth, took second on a walk to Henson and scored on a two-out single from Josh Fields to make the score 14-4, Sacramento. The Isotopes found one more run in the sixth with back-to-back doubles from Cruz and Federowicz that made the score 14-5 in favor of the River Cats.

Albuquerque was kept scoreless through the final three innings due to shutdown performances from Sacramento's relief pitchers. Fautino De Los Santos tossed two scoreless frames and Rich Thompson retired three of the final four 'Topes batters, closing out a 16-5 River Cats win. The 11-run defeat is the biggest loss the 'Topes have suffered this season.

The 'Topes continue their series against Sacramento tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Isotopes righty Fernando Nieve (1-1, 10.47) will get the ball against River Cats right-hander Graham Godfrey (3-0, 1.38) in game two of the four-game set.

The Isotopes continue their 12-game homestand tomorrow, with upcoming games featuring a replica jersey giveaway, Celebrity Softball Game, "Bark In the Park," and a special Military Appreciation Weekend with back-to-back fireworks shows.
